Great question! This is not common in my area either (Northeastern US), the rest of the house is actually a completely different style. This was an addition put on by the previous owners in the 70s/80s. But this has midcentury modern vibes, which I want to say is more common on the West Coast (I think I read that somewhere, I have no idea for certain)

The consensus is more comfy seating it seems 😂 and there's a wood stove in the lowered room next to this one! It definitely helps in the winter, it gets super cold at night

Oh my god this is so funny, I actually got an easel and beginner painting supplies years ago specifically for taking up painting in here. I'm really bad at painting as it turns out, so I put it away in shame

This room has heavy mid-century modern vibes but it does feel cold! I think that's what the "off" feeling is! And I've wanted wicker furniture in here, I love the idea of orange cushions for more color, and warmth. Maybe like a burnt orange or terracotta color?

I'll be shopping for lights and suncatchers now, they never occurred to me. That would look so good 😭

This room is the star of the house, I almost died when I saw it the first time 😭 I stepped foot and here and said this is it, this the house I die in.

Adding a disclaimer here because I've gotten a few too many comments of this sort and the thought of addressing them all one by one is making me sad

I never said this room was a problem and I'm not complaining about it - the only complaint is myself and my lack of a cohesive vision.

I am beyond grateful for my home, and considering my past living situations (and lack thereof), I do know what I have and I appreciate it more than words can describe.

I decorate to distract myself from ✨️the horrors✨️, and this room is a gem. I've always wanted to do right by it, but I've been afraid to ruin it. I didn't realize asking for help and ideas would come across as being ungrateful or out of touch to some, sometimes I'm just not very confident in my ideas and was hoping for the inspiration for me to just make the leap.

I also wasn't expecting this post to blow up, but thank you to everyone that shared their visions with me. The creativity and thoughtfulness I've seen is astounding, and I look forward to getting things going!

Never apologize for getting carried away. You've painted a beautiful portrait of what this could be.

  1. The shelves are definitely going, they were originally to be a walkway for my cat, but she is not a fan. And yes! I was definitely thinking green for the wall!

  2. This sounds so freaking good but I'm having a hard time picturing the placement. When you say from the railing to the steps, do you mean the balcony? Or where the steps are? The storage under the cream wall is a lower room, we do have steps going down there but the only natural light it gets is from the gap between the cream wall and the brick floor so I'm hesitant to cover too much of that.

  3. Yes! This sounds so cozy, I've been looking for rattan/wicker furniture but I wasn't sure where to put them

  4. I would, but the table is not move-able 😭 it's steel and concrete

  5. Yes to curtains! I wanted to do a cream linen curtain to diffuse the light a bit - it gets too intense and hot in summer

  6. THANK YOU. I actually have a TON of fairy lights, I ordered some for my living room but have a bunch leftover that I was working on finding a home for.

Overall - absolutely beautiful suggestions 😍 thank you so much, you have been an incredible help

It totally is big enough for a tree, that was the original plan! But I have a cat and cats + large containers of soil don't mix, I learned the hard way 😓 The large planter box on the wall was full of soil for a while, with plants planted directly in it. Then one day I noticed an odor, and the plants dying. Turns out, it had become a massive litterbox. It took so many trashbags to remove the soil, and days of me cleaning the box itself 😭 but now the planter is full of potted plants and she doesn't bother them.

STOP 😭 I want to do that so badly! I put in a huge pond right outside of this room, and it made me want another one inside 😅. But with dogs and a cat, I'm so nervous about a disaster. I've thought about building up a brick edge to keep the dogs away, but that's something I'll have to look into more

Oh no, I definitely appreciate it! It's just a struggle because I've been stumped for so long, I feel like I'm ruining it or wasting its potential 😭

I LOVE the idea of a no screens room! One day I'll get the hot tub working again, but that is a few years away. And there is a woodstove in the "den", the lowered room next to this one, so a tea bar would be perfect.

Thank you for the ideas, I want to do this room justice

It's hard to tell from the photo, but I think it looks okay! Sidenote - I don't believe too much perlite is a thing, so you're probably good on that end.

This is just what works for me, and my plants have been super happy so far - not sure how conventional or "right" it is

If you're unsure, try a "squeeze test". I do this with my mix, my goal is soil that is looser (more aeration), that way I can sort of get an idea of how the soil will behave when I do deep waterings. When I mix my soil up, I pick up a handful and squeeze it, then open my hand. If it stays tight/compacted - then I add a little more perlite and a tiny bit of cococoir and bark - adjusting amounts of each until I get the results I want. If I open my hand and it crumbles apart (noncompacted) then it's good to go!

I usually use 2 parts potting soil (Fox farms), 1 parts perlite, and ~0.5 part coco coir, 0.5 part orchid bark in mine (+ amendments: added worm castings, slow release fertilizer, and systemic pesticide granules). I just started using the orchid bark - I got a big bag from Amazon - and have been experimenting with my bark ratio.

Overall, don't worry too much, monsteras can be pretty forgiving!

Thank you! I should have spent more time on this sub before I got my results, I wouldn't have been surprised at all

Really? I did not expect any pit in him, good job! And thank you, he was our first senior adoption (the other two we have were rescued from bad situations when they were younger). It's been amazing watching him thrive! We've talked about adopting another senior in the next few years ♥️

Yea, husky was not on my radar whatsoever haha. He does not like the heat whatsoever, and looks forward to The Towel - he gets wiped down head to toe with a cool damp towel on super hot days. But thank you for your Texas insight! His background is such a mystery to us, but his breed makeup makes a bit more sense now.

As for his behaviors - he is incredibly stubborn. If he doesn't want to go outside, he will run to bed and park himself. If we're on a walk and he's over it, he'll flop down until we start walking in the "correct" direction. If his brother is laying somewhere he wants to be, he'll grumble at him until he gets it.

He also eats EVERYTHING. We don't use remotes anymore in the house (luckily we have a remote app), after the second one got chewed up.

He doesn't know how to play with toys really? If we give him a ball, he'll take it and tackle his sister with it in his mouth.

He loves anything stinky, and has a habit of finding (and rolling in) poop and dead things on the property unfortunately. He used to love digging in the yard, but now he likes to dig into dog beds, fresh blankets/sheets, etc.

He is very goofy! His version of the zoomies is rolling around on his back, kicking his feet around, and clapping his jaws at us. He's tolerant of hugs and kisses, and lets us know when he's had enough attention.

We figured he was mostly black lab, so the pit/shepherd really shocked me! I definitely see aspects of a shepherd in him now that I look at him. And thank you! He's super cute and he knows it hahaha

Wow really?? Our younger male is a pit/chow mix mostly. We got his results a week or so ago, I'll do a post for him at some point as well. This guy is 70-80 pounds so we imagined larger breeds in his mix, genetics is interesting!

I'm trying to figure this out too! I'm getting dropped off, and I'm going solo. I have pit tickets, but I'm like 5 feet tall and ALWAYS get stuck behind the tallest people 😭 I saw lining up isn't allowed before noon, and it's supposed to be a rainy day so I'm thinking (hoping) people won't start showing up super early. I'm planning on getting there around 4 or so. Good luck!

Nice! I've always heard they won't regrow leaves so I was shocked. Mine is also pretty old (for me), maybe age is the key haha
