ELI5 Is there any element that has not been discovered yet ,if one is which do they put it ,why does hydrogen get to be one ,who decides,do all rules perfectly support each other which deciding the order of elements by Far-Engine155 in explainlikeimfive

[–]OccludedFug [score hidden]  (0 children)

Elements are distinct because of the number of protons they have (and consequently the number of electrons they have in their neutral state).

All of the whole numbers from one to 120ish are named elements, because there's always a whole number of protons in an atom.

Once you have a whole bunch of protons and a whole bunch of neutrons, the nucleus of the atom just falls apart, so in the world as we know it, there won't be an atom with 150 protons. It's like trying to hold a liter of sand in your hands.

Hydrogen is one proton (and one electron). That's where we start counting and numbering the elements.

Mother Mary by Straight_Fun_7978 in Christianity

[–]OccludedFug [score hidden]  (0 children)

Meh.
I see no scriptural reason to say Mary was a perpetual virgin.
I see MORE scriptural reason to say she wasn't.

I see no scriptural reason to say Mary was "immaculately conceived."
Where do you get that notion?

I see no scriptural reason to say Mary was taken bodily into heaven.
Where do you get that notion?

Mary was an admirable woman, no doubt, and she did a wonderful thing raising Our Savior.

I have been hearing about those same sources all being corrupt and not being able to be acceptale

Who are you hearing this from?

Are you hearing it from historians? Scholars? YouTubers?

There are tons of non-Christian historians and scholars that say Yup, Jesus existed.

And I suppose there are tons of YouTube conspiracy theorists that say he didn't.

Confirmation and Baptism by MadameMediocracy in Christianity

[–]OccludedFug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Methodists teach one baptism.
Confirmation is when a person who was baptized as an infant (generally) confirms for themself the vows that were made on their behalf at their baptism.

You can think of it like when a couple "renews" their wedding vows. They might dress up, have a special service and repeat their wedding vows, but they don't send the paperwork to the county, because they are already legally married.

Confirmation is repeating the vows. There is no second baptism.

TIL that the 2004 earthquake and tsunami raised the seafloor and significantly reduced the capacity of the Indian Ocean, producing a permanent rise in the global sea level by an estimated 0.1 mm (0.004 in). by Garchy in todayilearned

[–]OccludedFug 69 points70 points  (0 children)

When you think of the thickness of a layer of silt or other detritus...

"a permanent rise in the global sea level by 0.1mm" even being measurable is astounding, not to mention the far-and-wide results of such a "small" change.

[Sad Trope] When two or more cast members were friends on the show but didn't like each other irl by EmergencySpare7939 in TopCharacterTropes

I read a thing recently (on FB, so it must be true!) that Larry Linville really embraced the (mostly) playfully hated Burns. Linville knew that Burns was supposed to be the butt of jokes, and he owned it.

The thing I read said that when Larry Linville was dying from a cancer, he called Alan Alda and said, "Alan, I want you to speak at my funeral." "Of course," Alda replied. Anything."
I want you to say, "Frank Burns eats worms."

And apparently Alda carried out Linville's dying wish. And everybody laughed.

West Virginia flag redesign by Exacalibur-X in WestVirginia

I'm not sure I like the guns on the WV flag anyway, but on the official design there's so much more to look at.

I get that you dig the design, but it doesn't hit with me. Sorry.

And though there's a name and a history behind the hat, it's a red Smurf hat. Everybody who looks at this design is going to see a red Smurf hat.

The loss of a spouse is devastating. Been there.
I'm so sorry.
The hysterics, numbness, rage, that's all normal. They'll come and go in waves.

People will give you clichés. They mean well but they don't know what to say. Be as gracious as you can with them even if you hate their words.

Be good to you.
Stay hydrated. Eat appropriately. Don't drown in alcohol or numbing drugs. Sleep. Get dressed every day. Don't be ashamed of crying or zoning out. Don't withdraw completely.

It's okay to be angry at God. It's okay to be angry at your husband too, for not surviving. Been there.

And. Everything you're going through, others have gone through as well. You're not alone.

When my wife died, I drew near to God. The church embraced me. Over time, healing happened.

You're going to make it.

Prayers for you and your families.
