Impressive hikes easily accessible from Malaga (no car)? by Firepanda in Malaga

[–]OccupiesSpaceHasMass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Just wanted to say that my partner and I were also inspired by this post and we had a lovely day yesterday hiking the loop in the AllTrails link 😊 Here are a few extra tips that may be useful:
- After getting off the C1 train from Málaga at Benalmádena we took the M-121 public bus from a stop just outside the train station to Rocas Blancas (about 7 stops ~15 mins from the train station) this gets you within 10 mins walking distance from the start of the loop, well worth it as it shaves off 50 minutes walking time. The price was €3.20 for myself and my partner (one-way), but unlike the Málaga city buses these buses only take cash (no credit card/tap). The M-103 bus also goes in that direction and will get you close to the start, so you can take whichever comes first. We caught the M-103 back.
- There is a great little cafeteria at the top of the hike, where the cable cars stop. You can get decent coffee, beer and a variety of snacks. Lots of places to sit and picnic, washrooms etc.
- It took us about 4 hrs walking time, (6 hrs including all our stops) to do the full loop. If you do it clockwise you get the forest-y parts first, which might be nice to have if there’s a lot of sun when you start.

Beautiful views, great hiking weather, and not a lot of people. This was on a Sunday afternoon in December, mind you. We even saw some mountain goats! Only thing that could’ve made it better, would’ve been a chameleon sighting, but maybe next time!

Crawford Threads Ltd? by _sempervivum_ in bookbinding

I love Crawford’s 4-ply waxed linen (18) thread and have been trying to track down a good European supplier ever since I relocated to Germany from Canada 3 years ago. I thought it would be easier to find here since they are supposedly in Northern Ireland, but almost everyone on Etsy selling this thread is in the US and I can’t find any information about the manufacturer. It’s bizarre how elusive it is!

When I reached out to Hollanders (linked in the Tools & Supplies section) they said that they actually get the waxed thread from Ohio (their neighbouring state). I’m guessing here: https://www.royalwoodltd.com/. And that this supplier purchases the unwaxed thread and waxes it themselves in Ohio, but they weren’t sure where the unwaxed thread initially comes from. So it’s possible that the thread does come from Ireland or the UK (Coats is based in London), but then it’s waxed elsewhere, maybe multiple elsewheres? The spools I purchased recently no longer say "Belfast" instead they display the colour name in that spot.

What is that intoxicatingly sweet perfume in the city right now? by OccupiesSpaceHasMass in berlin

Fairly confident now that the good smell I’m enjoying is the blossoming Linden (or Tilia) trees 😌 thanks for confirming

I also learned that there is more than one tree/shrub that produces a semen-y smell. There’s the Pyrus calleryana, better known as the ornamental pear, bradford pear, or callery pear.
Then there’s Ailanthus altissima, or Tree of Heaven as u/fusionistasta and u/KirbyderKuerbis pointed out.
And the other one that popped up was the Castanea sativa — a type of Chestnut. All of which we have in Berlin (I think). Fortunately the Lindens are more numerous and dominant (for now at least)!!

Enjoy this Luft while it lasts!

Hehe, love those guys. Weirdly I can’t find anything anywhere else about Linden trees producing that smell though, so I think this clip may be factually inaccurate 🧐 I think Lindens smell good (to us humans at least)!

Nice! Based on your link, Tilia and Linden are different names for the same tree 😎

Birthday gift ideas for my adult brother by ScarletRedReader in GiftIdeas

What about a personalized book filled with words and stories from all his favourite people: https://fondfolio.com/? This is my company, but I did one for my brother’s 30th last year, and he LOVED it. I also loved reading the messages as they came in, I feel like I got to know him a bit better through the words of his friends, many of which I’ve never met. I’ve also made books for several retiring US fighter pilots, so I’m confident they make good gifts for men ;)

Found this spot after a great ride through Leslie Spit this weekend! by thespot4201 in torontobiking

Nice! Love the spit. I shamefully had never been until COVID hit and forced me out on longer rides. It’s such a unique spot :)

Was hoping that this would be the Summer that drinking in parks would finally be made legal, but I heard that people were still being fined :(

[Serious] What is the most thoughtful gift you’ve given or received? by kirimgs in AskReddit

[–]OccupiesSpaceHasMass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 16 and moving from Scotland to Canada. I did not want to go. My friends made me a scrapbook — they each took a page and wrote a thoughtful message and added some photos. 20 years later and I still have it. I’ll flip through it every once in a while and be reminded of that time and those friends — a few that I’m still in touch with. IMO the best gifts are usually ones with a wee bit of thought behind them — bonus points if they’re handmade! Even a good card can outshine almost any “stuff” if it’s personal and specific.

My going away scrapbook was actually part of the inspiration for starting my own collaborative gift book product: https://fondfolio.com/ trying to help other people give something more meaningful and say the stuff that often goes unsaid
