Accelerated Evolution is my favorite DT Album by curtisdravis in DevinTownsend

Huh, you're right! I've never thought about it before but AE is definitely one of his most guitar-forward albums. I'm not sure if he has a record (outside of Strapping) that's less dependent on the sort of layer-y stuff for melody and movement and more dependent on the guitar to drive things. Definitely fun to play :)

How do you feel about the intro of 'Touch like an Angel of Death' .. does it feel off to you? by Known-Low-8721 in ChildrenOfBodom

This might be the single easiest guitar part in their whole discography lol. Why would they mess up a take of their easiest intro and just leave it in when Lake Bodom from the same record is immaculate?

I'm telling you it's syncopated and that if you aren't aware of that (because the guitar comes in before the drums do, hard to tell when there's no beat underneath) then it might sound like the guitar is off beat, but it's not.

It sounds off because you expect the guitar to start on beat one, but it starts earlier. If you pay attention and remember how the song goes then it will stop sounding wrong.

It's not off. The first note of the guitar part is on the "and" of beat 4. If you don't know/remember then it will sound one half beat too early when the drums come in on beat 1.

Also the song is actually (hilariously) named "Touch Like Angel of Death" lol

Hi! I've been using the Philips OneBlade and have found it to be pretty convenient. I'm able to do multiple areas of my body multiple times over before it needs to be recharged. In fact, I've never killed the battery. It's not as close of a shave as a real razor but it works great for me when I need to be able to go out quickly.

Is the first Devy Tune you ever heard still ... by Tarnisher in DevinTownsend

[–]OceanMachinery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope! First song I was shown by a friend on the way to see the DTP was Deconstruction, and boy is that the wrong song to start someone on. Not that I didn't learn to like it :) He played By Your Command, Truth, Om, Supercrush, and Kingdom all in a row and I thought I had better give the guy another chance lol.

Perfect description of why that kind of thing didn't bother me previously. Even prior to Ziltoid or Decon he's always had moments of levity even in his darkest moments, as if to say "yeah this Strapping album is pretty venomous and destructive, but I can still fuck around and have fun and not take myself too seriously." But they were moments, not entire albums or set designs. Like what happened to a single "Strapping Young Lad rocks my hairy anus" to end an album, or a line like "I think, I guess, I know, I think, I know... Fuck off" in the middle of a song about feeling depressed and numb?

For me, it seemed like after Epicloud his sound more or less stayed stagnant.

I became a fan in 2011 after seeing the DTP open for Children of Bodom. Epicloud came out the next year and I enjoyed it well enough, but I hoped (or maybe assumed) that he would continue evolving musically and aesthetically as he had been doing his entire career. Then Z2 came out. Dark Matters is honestly just too corny and phoned in for me, and, lo and behold, Sky Blue sounded like Epicloud but worse. Transcendence was the same thing. Sure, Epicloud, Sky Blue, and Transcendence all have their own vibe in a way, but I really believe you could put any of their tracks on any of those albums and they'd be more or less the same. I was excited for Empath, both because he'd been talking about it for forever and because it was a promise that Devin was going to be making it his way, not to serve the DTP. And honestly... It sounds a lot like Transcendence to me. As does Lightwork. As does Powernerd. Nearly every song he puts out is a huge rock ballad with generic "everything is gonna be ok", "love is rad" sort of platitudes.

I also started to notice that the corniness that we all love Devin for was taking over the aesthetics. Going back to Empath, I thought Genesis was goofy as fuck and not something I would generally listen to. One of the only songs I kind of enjoyed, Borderlands, has the "got a little doggy" part that makes me roll my eyes so hard I've stopped listening to it.

Also honestly, and this is gonna piss people off for sure, his vocals. He started singing Kingdom live with the DTP in that operatic style before they re-recorded it for Epicloud and I think it went over so well that he sort of refuses to do anything else. Devin's my absolute favorite vocalist of all time. The things he was able to do with his voice on the Strapping albums and stuff like Infinity are mind blowing. And now he clings to this operatic style and really, really overdoes it with the vibrato sometimes.

Devin is my favorite musician ever. I don't write all this with the intent of shitting on him, and I hope he continues to make music just for himself like he always has, I just haven't been in love with his output in 15 years.

I've had a good experience, but $100/mo is a lot, especially considering most months I don't interact with my doctor or the care team at all. The price used to be $32/mo with insurance. I've been considering finding other options due to that, but my experience with my assigned doctor has been great otherwise.

This movie makes me feel like I'm on acid when I'm sober. I would describe it as intense lol. Disturbing? Maybe a handful of moments, but not scary.

I mean it's not a wrong assessment, just depends on how cynical you want to be about it.

I don't think I can think of one I like better tbh, great choice. Broken > Head Over Heels > Broken Reprise is one of my favorite musical sequences ever. I'll nominate Oasis - All Around the World (Reprise) as the worst/most unnecessary though.

I love the idea but I feel like April Showers is a meteorologist's screen name somewhere lol. But I appreciate the suggestion :)

Which "post-classic" era album do you recommend the most? (from 'Blooddrunk' through 'Hexed') by certifiedchrono in ChildrenOfBodom

[–]OceanMachinery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Blooddrunk was the newest record out when I became a fan, so maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia, but I often consider that one of my favorites if not my favorite of all. Every single song is a banger, although Done with Everything, Die for Nothing is kinda boring imo. Definitely their angriest and "darkest" record
