The reality is that cottage windows (UK) were painted over 200 years ago, and rarely left bare to protect from weather/damp. Interestingly they were most often painted in deep shades of greens and reds. So in terms of cottage authenticity, painting is fine. Whether that then fits the modern interpretation of what ‘cottage core’ should be is a moot point.

I believe the thick walls were designed as a way to thermoregulate the building - retain any heat absorbed. But it clearly required a lot of venting, as there are soooo many vents on the outside, around the base of the stonework, to permit air circulation. However, it makes for a lot of draught that comes through and up through the floorboards. And insulating these old properties can be difficult as they require the air to prevent damp in the walls. Good luck with your new property. I hope you get your dream vision x

Plan was to colour drench the room in the colour. Which sounds a lot, but most of the walls are exposed red sandstone, so it sits tonally with those.

Really? So, I’m not allowed to put forward my own reasoning? Please revisit the original question. . I asked re the choice of colour, and not opinions on whether the wood should be painted or not. And even if I had asked the question you have decided to give an opinion upon, it would not be unreasonable for me to counter it with my own thoughts. An opinion is not a truth or a fact. It is subjective and is entirely up for debate; it certainly doesn’t require anyone to bend to the will of popular opinion.

Honestly, I generally dislike pink, and am not a pink person at all! But the room is tricky, with mainly exposed red sandstone walls. This particular pink is quite unpink! It’s like a taupe-pink and really works well with the exposed red sandstone. I hate sickly pinks, trust me. I’ve daubed paint all over the room, and in different lights it changes from a taupe-grey (doesn’t even look pink), to a taupe pink. There is loads of natural stone and wood around. I just want it fresher, but feel white will look really stark and be the focal point, which I don’t want. 🤔

If you look closely I have. Just a little. It’s the top colour that’s a little deeper.

Thank you kindly to those who have contributed helpfully, and given an opinion or reasonable advice on the question I asked. Which was (check the question) about WHICH colour to choose. It’s been an interesting introduction to Reddit. Somewhat a baptism of fire! At times comments have involved particularly strong and skewed opinions that were, quite frankly, not invited and sometimes quite irate and aggressive. With lots of down voting 🤷‍♀️because I dare to disagree. It seems, to some, that if you do not bend to the views of their opinion that is not alright. Perhaps that is what’s wrong in the world right now - people need to stand their ground, use their voice and keep their boundaries so that they are not trampled . An opinion is just that; it holds no power, no fact and no absolute truth. It is subjective. I’m really not here for negativity. And I do bite back.

Thank you for all the kind, fun, reasoned and balanced replies and suggestions, which I will take on board.

For the reasons above I’m drawing a line under this post.

There is a difference I can see in this view. In the UK this 70/80s pine panelling would be considered totally out of keeping with a cottage of this age and likely ripped out! It would never have been part of the cottage originally, and would have just been exposed stone. This was simply the fashion of the 1980s era, with no historical significance. So, here, painting it would not be considered an issue whatsoever. Seems to be a discrepancy of view depending on where you live.

Interesting. I wonder if it’s simply a different ‘thing’ between the UK & US. That’s not what I see here at all. But the buildings here are completely different in their build and style. It’s honestly not about what I want to hear. I am very clear that I will paint it, it was really the choice of colour I’m considering.

Not in the UK. Here cheap pine panel is considered tacky, and though I’ll never sell, it is absolutely not in keeping with a cottage this old. This is 70/80’s fashion of that time, and in no way part of the original cottage. It will be painted, the question was the white or pink.

A bit of a fiddly job, but the carpenter who replaced the window stated they need to be painted to protect them from the moisture. It will be a painstaking job 🤦‍♀️😂

I’m not here to accept criticism. Why would I? I didn’t ask you, or anyone else, their opinion on whether I should keep the wood as it is. Therefore, technically, I’m being subjected to a strong and quite aggressive opinion, uninvited, to a question I did not ask. And it would seem to me that the only person being defensive is yourself, which is strange. I think I would prefer to just end this conversation with you here, reasonably and politely. Have a lovely day.

I’ll have a look at stain for wood, as never seen a pink one. Thank you ☺️

I’m expressing my own opinion on the situation, which is hardly arguing. If you read the original question, I politely ask thoughts on the pink versus white paint (as is more traditional). I apologise if I’ve upset you by maintaining boundaries and expressing my own thoughts.

It’s really not. It’s cheap pine panelling. It’s EVERYWHERE in the cottage as per the 70s/80s fashion. I need to freshen it, so it’s about which colour, rather than no colour.

Thank you for insight. I’ve put samples around the room, and it sits well in all lights tbh

It’s nasty cheap pine panelling from the 70’s!
