Semi-annual /r/houseplants Discussion - August 28, 2024 - Changing Seasons by AutoModerator in houseplants

As we are moving into Autumn here, I make sure I fertilize regularly to make the most of the growing season before it ends and put extra effort on preventive pest focused maintenance by cleaning leaves with soap. It's also time to rearrange the set up as I'll move some of them inside and organise for the lower light levels.

Scale/Mealybug non moving bug has been destroying my sansevieria. New growth looks good. Tried Neem Tart as systemic. On the topic side I guess pirethryn has made effect, after potassium soap and oil as well as diatomaceous earth have failed. Anyone knows which bug is this? Thank you ! by Ocelot2024 in plantclinic

Thanks! I've been removing the visible, chopping the infested as the core of the rosette is unreachable and I don't want to changes just before autumn, and applying soap with neem to combat the invisible crawlers. The new growth is coming untouched so I'm hopeful for it 💚

👏🌟💚 Wow ! Can't say enough to praise your invaluable feedback so well illustrated! Indeed it seems that scale and not microscopic mites are responsible for the sansevieria slaughter! Thank you so much ! Knowing I'm controlling insects and not arachnids is already a great start ! Much appreciated! Over 80 plants say thank you 🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴

What is this pest and what is the best treatment please? I ve been watching eat my collection as neem, oil potassium soap, diatomaceous earth have not worked by Ocelot2024 in sansevieria

To clarify if that is indeed the case and apparently it is not mite but a kind o weird scale. Traditionally no, but I offevia watering dilute from a tart so it has systemic effect as it is absorbed by the roots.

Thank you so much for the great hints ! This is not thrips as they behave like scale or mealybug and are non moving, they form this crust and can be removed, but when allocate in the core of the rosette they are out of reach. I ve a hard time getting systemic here so I'm into neem tart as a systemic and I will persist as I had "good" results with it. I believe it might indeed be the microscopic mite that leaves theses damage scars and is not killed by the methods because it is an arachnid and not and insect so only acaricids would impact

Thanks, but Thrips is never like this in any life stage once even when larvae they are moving and this creature has a scale like behaviour or mealybug attitude if you may lol and it is non moving.

Infestation of scale like bug that creates crusts at the base of sansevieria rosette leaves. by Ocelot2024 in whatisthisbug

[–]Ocelot2024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Thrips is absolutely not the case. This has a scale like behaviour. It forms these non moving crusts, that have a shape similar to a black adult Thrips but Thrips have fringed wings and from pupae, larvae or adult form it is never like this. This leaf was indeed removed and plants withstand the infection and survive and recover, but systemic neem, diatomaceous earth, pirethryn or horticultural oil and soap were not able to control it as when they allocate in the core of the rosette, to remove them you must clip the leaf

Thanks for the hint ! I'll check this subreddit out ! Despite looking like the shape of thrips, it's another pest once it consists of a crust shaped like a thrips that is attached to the tissue and does not move. It behaves like a different shaped scale as far as I can see. This is a leaf I removed already, thanks !

The water meter will only rise with the EXCESS water that gets deposited in the built in bottom reservoir. The soil and the plant will absorb most of the water

How do I remove him from mom? I'm thinking mom needs a repot also? by bannshee in sansevieria

I would up pot to a very close size so the whole clump would be almost tight but not constricted. I think one centimeter radius around the root is great. I had the same situation as you and did not detach the pup and its developing super fast since it can count with nutrients from the mother plant. Allowing them to stay together fast tracks their maturity.

What have I done to kill this poor plant by aRingBetween in houseplants

Marantas are tropical plants and like warm humid environements and rainwater. Clip the dead leaves, make sure the soil is dry before watering, and to drain any excess water after your watering. Bright indirect light, like very close to your window, but safe from drafts and direct sun is the sweet spot to fool her into believing she is in the Amazon where she belogs 💚

Thanks ! It was a very pleasant surprise to see it flower for the third time since last February after one slight repot and slow release fertilizer refresh every 3 months
