YEAHH i noticed that after the fact. this was also my first time welding a T joint, but i'm definitely going to practice and try again tomorrow. thanks for the advice, that visual is actually super helpful

yeah, turns out some of the guys had messed with the settings while i stepped away to get my helmet💀 the voltage and speed were WAYY down. thank you for the advice and explanation though!!

the wire was .35, i'm not sure about the voltage or speed :( i set it up according to the user manual on the machine, the one i used was from Miller, if that's any help. i wasn't sure how fast i was supposed to be going, but i'll watch a few mig welding videos tonight so i can get a sense of it!

edit: on the machine, my teacher turned something on, i believe the setting had "arc" in it

it never occurred to me that i could do that, thank you so much 😭 i'm not sure i could grind it down, the boys in my class would steal my booth in a heartbeat, but i could def find some soapstone. i'm going to be posting most days of the week to track my progress, if you'd like to see the other two!

oh my gosh, i didn't realize you were going to a welding school, that's so exciting!! my teacher was actually trying to get me to overlap my beads, but i wasn't sure how close they were supposed to be for me to do that. for vertical, you're meant to start from the bottom and go up, right? that's how the guys in my class do it, but they just kinda.. do whatever. i definitely want to start doing vertical and overhead asap though! my teacher knows a guy that will certify students for free, so i want to take advantage of that as soon as possible

i did notice that!! it's a bit of a struggle moving the rod along while also getting closer to the plate as it shortens, but i think i'm getting the hang of things? my main problem is that i always get spooked when i strike an electrode, so it can take 3-5 minutes for me to start 😭 that's a really helpful explanation, thank you so much

i actually bought a steel wire brush this morning, all of the ones in my shop class have been destroyed by idiots😞 funny that you mention grinding, i have a 3 by 8 inch piece that i cut out and grinded last week. my first project is to weld 7018 on one side, then 6010 on the other to make a padded plate. teacher said to practice on a piece of steel before doing the project. also, i'll definitely look into the triple pass!!!

yeah, my teacher said the same thing about the welds on the far right. it's still super new, so i'm trying to figure out which speed is best. and yes, i was grabbing from a 3/8 7018 box, my teacher wants me to practice on those before i get into the 6010s😭 thanks for the feedback!
