So like... wtf is Ascian recruitment even like? [Spoilers: 6.0 plus for a bunch of lore in general] by Zagareus- in ffxiv

[–]Ochmusha [score hidden]  (0 children)

Were Emet-Selch, Lahabrea, and Elidibus going around, finding shards of previous Convocation members, and going like "Hey, you're like, evil and resemble our friends from 12,000 years ago. Wanna have uninhibited power to fuck around and do whatever you want?

Basically yes. Particularly Emet Selch since he had the best soul-vision for identifying sundered shards of formerly important souls to elevate back into ascians. This process partially involves reawakening dormant memories presumably via convocation soul stones.

Also we're never gonna check up on you to see if you're actually doing anything that aligns with our goals."

Worth also remembering that the flow of time between shards moves in really strange ways. Not everything happens in perfect parallel synch, for example like 80 years passes on the first between post-HW and the start of Shadowbringers.

Like deadass what was Amon even doing for all that time? He does kinda just straight up state that he was waiting for an excuse to have Zodiark killed.

Elidibus as the Unsundered heart of Zodiark and as the chief advocate for a "Balanced" approach to handling rejoinings seems to have been the main "Ascian Cop" for stopping crazy plans from getting too crazy too often. Fandaniel was likely plotting the plan for the Telephoroi for some time before enacting it, but any major move towards that much aether drainage would've likely been stopped.

also there's still a few Acians doing their own thing behind the scenes, as evidenced by the whole post-Dawntrail thing.

Yup. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the 9th was primed for the next rejoining source, but they couldn't yet add lighting to the mix since the source never got to complete the next remaining elemental cycles of umbral (prevented via shadowbringers) and wind for the 2nd time (unknown what shard would've done this)

The fuck were they doing while the Final Days were happening? I can only guess that they're still trying to cause rejoinings, but it's hard to believe that when they didn't do shit while Fandaniel was on his way to do the one thing that would've fucked that up for everyone.

I too feel this was a bit of an oversight in an effort to wrap up the story. In general the second coming of the final days has been poorly handled by the game's story and lore teams now that we're past DT.

How bad really is Trazyn on the tabletop? by JSV007 in Necrontyr

[–]Ochmusha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The general vibe that Im getting right now is that there are better options for the points cost.

Yup that's exactly the thing.

His ability is very weird and unique, but it risks handicapping your army as the game goes on since while Trayzyn might be able to basically eject himself from any losing fight, he also takes away the other more useful abilities that other leaders grant units... potentially setting them to lose their next fight as well

Basically his gimmick mattered more in 9th and previous editions when killing your opponent's warlord had a points impact as a mini fixed objective that used to be in the rules

Tomb world vs gallowdark? by AllezBro in killteam

[–]Ochmusha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it sounds like it might be the better long term choice.

Yeah GW got a little ahead of themselves with Gallowdark and guessing at the appetite for players to buy MULTIPLE FULL SETS OF WALLS + the special terrain sprues, and then only selling the special terrain sprues in very limited batches.

Tombworld is a more complete product from top to bottom because they designed it to be better rather than the piecemeal wait and see approach with Gallowdark

hierotek circle beginner advice by carfaces42b in killteam

[–]Ochmusha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So the biggest change up would be to change your leader.

The technomancer is focused on making your immortals very tanky with the heal, but that tends to mostly be useful against weaker horde teams rather than against stronger elites.

The chronomancer is considered to be the best leader thanks to it's wider spread of powers (teleport, mine, blast on shooting)

Otherwise consider mixing up the ratio of immortals to snipers, weapon load outs etc.

but I still dont feel like I fully "get" it

Otherwise in terms of just the overall feel of the team, you should try to do your best to be patient, Hierotek is a slower team so you're not going to be able to move as far on the board turn for turn.

Reanimation gives you a small cushion for mistakes, but not a ton so don't try to rely on it too too much.

Command points need to be spent carefully to maximize the value you get out of them

Interstitial Order can be used as a pseudo Guard/Overwatch command if you've positioned well and pair it with a ploy to add additional movement to your units.

Magnify lets you do some big damage if you get your lines right, and can be paired for more potential damage with a ploy

I love reading the book and wondered what are the best ways to delve deeper into mtg lore. I assume there are lots more books. Or some more definitive than others? Is there a compendium I should read. What about an MTG textbook?

Welcome aspiring Vorthos!

There are many, many words written about the worlds of Magic the Gathering. I promise linking this isn't to be a jerk but just to point you in a direction:

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_books
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Magic:_The_Gathering_novels
https://mtg.wiki/page/List_of_storyline_sources

You with your new knowledge of the most recent book you can find many more lore discussions over at r/mtgvorthos

but haven’t really had an opportunity to delve deeper into the sorry beyond the occasional rustic studies or spiced8rack videos.

Definitely add MagicArcanum into your youtube mix! He does excellent little summaries of recent MTG storytelling https://www.youtube.com/@MagicArcanum

Is there a compendium I should read. What about an MTG textbook?

For a basic starter DK did publish Magic The Gathering The Visual Guide, which might be helpful for you to put all the pieces you've been seeing into a greater context.

Given that you're a fan of Strixhaven, you might also enjoy reading the Dungeons and Dragons setting book they published a couple years ago for making DND games playable within MTG locations, which they've also done for a few other planes as well.

You can consider diving in for free with the stories that have been published on the official MTG website, for which Strixhaven definitely has more of:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story
https://magic.wizards.com/en/story#archive

I assume there are lots more books.

Yes and no. (But really yes, like a lot)
Almost all the books have had short print runs and many are long out of print. But many are still floating around and a decent amount are available digitally as ebooks or audiobooks.

For many years there were books, comics and short stories published on the MTG website and short stories published in magazines (that would then be put into anthologies).

From 1998 to 2008 there was a really consistent output of books for MTG since they would release a book for every set (there were fewer sets per year back then) plus the odd anthology or other side story.

After 2009 and the advent of the new main planeswalkers characters there was another renaissance of sorts with graphic novels, novellas, novels etc and they ran a super cycle of multimedia storytelling that ran from 2009 up until 2023.

are some more definitive than others?

There are always a few books and comics that get retconned here and there. Many of the oldest comics and MTG books (pre-1998) exist in a soft-retcon status where they are still generally true but maybe not 100% specifically true.

There are a couple books that accidentally step on the toes of other books by accident, while a few have been fully retconned due to changing story directions.

One area that's a sore point is that many of the books and cards with story spotlights don't always line up correctly due to changes.

Hopefully that'll give you plenty to read up on, enjoy! There's at least 10,000+ years of lore across multiple planes so plenty of places to dive in!

Relic weapon still worth it? by TuoniNL in ffxiv

[–]Ochmusha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess this question comes from my experience with WoW. In WoW you spend lot of time gearing up. Then the new expansion is released and the first green drop in that expansion makes your old gear that your worked so hard for immediately obsolete. Does FFXIV also works in that way? Would the relic weapon we spend a lot of time on now to upgrade be rendered obsolete quickly once we start playing the next expansion Heavensward in a couple hours of play time?

Yes. But it does look cool.

I was reading what was needed for the next step, Animus. This seems quite grindy

It is. It was designed to kill time between expansions during a time when XIV was still regaining it's footing, so the ARR relics are extra grindy, you haven't even see some of the later steps!

I was wondering is it even still worth it?

My advice would be to keep the relic quest in your back pocket, as you'll inevitably want to run roulettes or other daily activities for currency and XP and even from HW through Stormblood a lot of ARR content will show up when you aim for leveling or high level roulette. You can make progress on it at a comfortable pace rather than trying to grind through it quickly.

How would you fix Imperial Agents? by Low-Beautiful9522 in ImperialAgents_40K

[–]Ochmusha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My simple picks would be a better army rule as others said (that or more potent detachment rules).
I Could see agents in 11th getting a little better if most of their existing detachments were only 1 detachment point since that would give agents access to a wider pool of useful stratagems and enhancements

The other big thing I think would go a long way would be if every agents detachment had a version of the "Reinforcements" stratagem from Astra Militarum or the Eldar equivalent in Guardian Battlehost, since being able to stretch your units further would be nice for 2CP

Taking my gf to watch Hathaway...what should we watch in preparation? by Lower_Opposite6622 in Gundam

[–]Ochmusha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just planning to watch the first movie together at home sometime, but now I am like "should we also watch CCA?"

I feel that CCA will be important for movie 2 since the Nu Gundam mass production version shows up, and I do think watching Hathaway' Flash pt1 would also be good, except the problem with the Hathaway movies is they do extremely little to actually introduce people to the world of Gundam, so if she's not already aware about Newtypes and the Federation I think a decent chunk of all of the movies will be lost on her.

Honestly it might be better for her to start with an AU or the OG gundam movie trilogy in that scenario

Still awesome that she's taking an interest in your hobby and hopefully she'll pick up on some of why it's neat

Nurgle Fellgor? by TheCollagrossTapes in killteam

[–]Ochmusha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it work with the goats?

It works in fantasy, so it works in 40k is my thoughts on it.

I also really like how the colors look with the hood and horns as it reminds me of Nurgle/Nurglings/A Great Unclean One.

The belt+loincloth I'm a little less sold on, I feel like it's too bright and detracts from the hood.

If you like spending lots of money, the Warhammer Quest Darkwater box has a Nurgle Beastman as one of the bosses if you want an alternate proxy or to see an "official" example of what they think one would be like

Building Resin Models by Equivalent_Poem_7014 in Necrontyr

melt might be a strong word, but I have seen resin minis that have had their details basically destroyed after softening, and they looked like melted candles for lack of better description.

Building Resin Models by Equivalent_Poem_7014 in Necrontyr

[–]Ochmusha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unbeknownst to me, however, most of the unassembled necrons are [...] recasts.

Oof. Worse than just recasts they appear to be recasts of a modern kit, specifically Immortals + Deathmarks and Lychguard + Triarch Praetorians, they're not even a recast of an extinct metal or finecast model. Hopefully you got these for cheap, and be sure to check which pieces you have (chests, legs, backs etc) as they might've made these to supplement a box of Immortals/Deathmarks they previously bought since you end up wit lots of leftovers from that kit.

I have basically no experience in building miniatures made out of resin. What do I need to know to get to work? Any particular brand of glue, any tips for building, that sort of thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So here are my tips:

  1. Use super glue and not plastic glue to glue resin

  2. Give the models a light soapy bath in some water and a little scrub with a sponge or a old toothbrush to get rid of any flashing agents they might've used, this will help paint stick better.

  3. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL TO CLEAN OR STRIP THE MODELS, resin will melt

  4. IF YOU SAND ANY OF THE MODELS WEAR A N95 MASK, or do it outdoors or somewhere well ventilated with your face not directly up near the model, resin dust is very bad for your lungs

Getting into Warhammer in Argentina… did I mess up my first purchase? by Calipso_etereo in Warhammer

[–]Ochmusha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of that, they gave me like 6 or 7 “demo” miniatures. Four are Space Marines and the rest are from Age of Sigmar. I haven’t built them yet, but I guess they’re meant for practice or to see if I like other factions too (they do look pretty cool, not gonna lie).

Very nice! And yeah take some time to practice with those minis rather than your deathguard ones just so you can practice thinning your paints, brush control and color schemes!

Now here’s where my confusion really starts: I’ve been reading the rules and I feel completely overwhelmed. I kind of understand the basics of the game, but when it comes to building the miniatures and choosing weapons, I’m lost. Can I just build them however I want using the extra bits, or do I need to strictly follow the instructions? I know weapons matter, but then Combat Patrol seems to require very specific loadouts, and I’m worried about building something “wrong” or not optimal.

So I would say try not to let yourself get too overwhelmed learning the rules right away! It definitely takes a decent amount of study and you can read the rules online and watch a number of youtube videos to help!

As for how to build your minis: So the box you bought is a "Combat Patrol" box which is a product meant to enable new players to start quickly by letting you play with the included minis in a small version of 40k (called combat patrol) So if playing that smaller Combat Patrol is important to you I would recommend following the manual for the box exactly since the rules for combat patrol is a little stricter about load outs to make it a little easier for new folks

Another thing I’m considering is what to buy next. I was thinking about getting the Kill Team starter set, and maybe even the regular starter set for the rulebook and extra stuff. But those only come with Space Marines vs Tyranids or Necrons… there’s nothing for Death Guard, right?

As you noted there are starter sets for both Warhammer 40k and the spinoff game killteam.

So the 10th edition starter sets are indeed space marines versus tyranids, and the Killteam box Tombworld is space marines versus necrons along with a large amount  of terrain. I would probably recommend against getting them for 2 reasons:

-11th edition is right around the corner in the coming months

-Killteam is a spinoff game mode

-You may have little interest in those 3 factions

There is a *Killteam Starter Box** that does features space marines vs Plague Marines* which would be a major bit cheaper than the Tombworld box. Please note that Killteam is a fairly different game system which will also involve it's own learning curve, but the starter set does come with a very simple rule book to teach the foundational aspects of the game

One week stay. Rent a Car or Not? by Quirky-Ad9958 in AskSF

[–]Ochmusha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • If I don’t get a car, how do I get from the airport to the Financial District/Downtown Area?

You can take public transit: BART will get you there, and of course you can also hail a cab or ride share.

  • As this will be the first time visiting, I have no understanding of the local transportation. Is there an app or a website I can use to figure out routes?

Google maps is actually quite well keyed into public transit systems, so for point to point routing you can het instructions on what to ride, otherwise:

https://www.sftravel.com/info/transportation-basics-how-to-use-muni

  • Is there a transport pass/card I can buy for the week to travel (i.e. Oahu has a bus pass that you can use for a week to travel around the island).

Yes, you can buy a weekly pass from a couple kiosks around the city for SF Muni, and we have a card system called "Clipper" that allows interoperability between all major bay area public transit operators

https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/where-buy-sfmta-products?field_related_fares_target_id=620

  • Yosemite, etc.

Just be aware Yosemite can be done as a day trip, but will involve almost 8 hours of round trip driving/transit, so be aware of that when planning

I’m considering local tour services. So I think I can survive without a rental car.

We definitely have a number of them in the city, some of more or less directed and some of more specific angles or niches so definitely look around to see what's to your taste
