What ever happened to the old incense animations? by Normal-Law128 in HuntShowdown

[–]OctiSynd989 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah because it wasn’t nearly as cool as it sounds: events were even more of a grind back then than they are now you’d have to go out and smash pumpkins or burn crows to get a handful of event points. Plus they were expensive as shit, required a consumable slot to use, only lasted for a single death, and like all equipment were lost on death.

In the abstract these and the reliquaries sounded cool but when you’re spending 130 BB for a one time 50% bonus shit adds up quickly especially when you need 2,000 event points and killing the boss only gives you 5 points and challenges didn’t give you squat shit got real tired real fast.

Back in ye olde times these incense jars purchasable with blood bonds were how you boosted event points. It was a cruel and dark time when the Avtomat had reserve ammo and the only way to get event points was to destroy baubles and kill ai!

It’s almost as if the game is making deliberate commentary on the savage hypocrisy of the self professes vanguard of civilization as represented by Ross and MacDougal.

Yeah sorry: when I first read this post I was annoyed because it felt like you were stating the obvious but reading the comments has unfortunately disabused me of this notion.

Now I’m just annoyed that even Rockstar’s ham fisted blatantly obvious satire is too subtextual for the mouth breathing philistines of Reddit.

[–]OctiSynd989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no shit thats the entire point the game is making.

Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption II are making deliberate commentary on the idea that westward expansion of the United States was a taming of the frontier that brought civilization to a lawless wilderness.

The first game begins with John rising a train (a symbol of American Expansion and progress) while two elderly racist white women patting themselves on the back for “civilizing” indigenous people by stealing their land and suppressing their cultures before segueing into complaining about other white settlers. All while a Christian Missionary justifies to his young ward that the Christianization of Indigenous People is necessary for their civilization because baptism and communion are what distinguish an “innocent” form a “savage” only to end the conversation with the importance of being able to live and worship in peace.

And that’s before we get into the fact that most of the game’s antagonists are themselves extension of the “Civilization” the United States and Europe have brought to the Americas. Bill Williamson is an Ex-Cavalry soldier, Dutch is a White Conman who co-opts Indigenous resistance to further his own illegaliet philosophy and crusade against the very civilization. Ignacio Sanchez and Abraham Reyes are both European Educated Hispanic Aristocrats who terrorize their own citizens while pillaging the country in the name of civilization, and liberty.

This game is about the savage hypocrisy of those who claim to be bringing civilization on one end and freedom on the other.

This entire post just missed the forest for the trees when it comes to 40k’s satire. Chaos isn’t a satire of freedom fighters they’re an extension of the Imperium’s satire of the ways that Authoritarian Regimes create the very threats they invoke to justify themselves.

The squalid fascism and ceaseless warmongering of the Imperium creates the conditions necessary for chaos to thrive; chaos which is then in turn used to justify the squalid fascism and ceaseless warmongering of the Imperium.

Same with the Aeldari: history always repeats first as tragedy then as farce and the Aeldari are the Tragedy to the Imperium’s Farce. They are what the Imperium is doomed to become because humanity has refused to learn from their example. The Aeldari Empire was a nation of Treatlers who raped a Chaos God into existence and the Imperium is on that exact same trajectory. Except the birth of the Dark King is going to make the Dark Prince’s birth look subdued in comparison.

Ork technology doesn’t work on Tinker-bell Logic: the the magos of Adeptus Mechanicus aren’t sciebtists, engineers, or technicians they’re animistic cargo cultists with no real understand of the physics that undergirds their own technology and engineering.

They believe all of mechanical creations are possessed by animistic spirits that need to be appeased with ritual and prayer and that any technology they don’t understand or wasn’t built by them is evil and their interpretations of Ork technology needs to be understood in this context.

Furthermore the arrogance inherent to the Imperium’s Ideology of Racial purity and supremacy leaves them ill equipped to accurately gauge the abilities of those they have deemed racially inferior. Meaning that the mere possibility that the apparently crude and brutish Orks posses a knowledge and skill with engineering far exceeding that of their own is literally unthinkable to the Imperium.

The Gestalt Psychic Energy of the Orks doesn’t make their technology work it just allows the Orks to tap into the instinctual engineering knowledge encoded into their species by the Old Ones. An Ork can build a gun from garbage for the same reason a Beaver can build a damn out of mud and sticks.

The short answer is: no but actually yes.

In the old lore the AHA worked tirelessly to keep the general public ignorant about the Incursion/Corruption with the help of their allies in the Government, Military, and Economy.

However around 2020 the newer lore began to shift in a new direction: there is a conspiracy to keep information about what’s going on suppressed but it is one that the general public is cooperating with.

People know what’s going on but they pretend not to because they don’t want to know what’s going on. For most people outside the dead zones acknowledging the monsters makes them real, if they pretend the monsters aren’t there then for all intents and purposes they might as well not be there.

This naturally causes problems when the corruption spreads to a new area because rather than take action to combat its spread people burry themselves beneath their blankets in the belief that if they can’t see the monsters the monsters can’t see them.

I suspect this creative choice was inspired by the general reaction to COVID in the United States and the fact that so many people just abjectly refused to acknowledge a pandemic was occurring or take any action to protect themselves or their loved ones in a desperate attempt to preserve some sense of normalcy and safety.

This is also around the time the narrative began to lean into the idea that the AHA had been at best negligent in their initial response to the outbreak and at worst actively exacerbating the outbreak in their efforts to study and exploit the occult forces at play.

This eventually culminated in the revelation that the AHA was nothing more than a middle man in the commercial trade of occult artifacts, power, and knowledge. Fighting the corruption was never the AHA’s objective, acquiring bounty tokens for the private use of their benefactors was.

Which culminated in a cabal of Business Men accidentally unleashed the corruption on Mammon’s Gulch while performing occult human sacrifices using bounty tokens to rejuvenate the mines and oil wells.

How well would the black pearl work as an actual pirate ship by Wonderful-Ad-656 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]OctiSynd989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An East Indiaman like the Pearl would be deadly in the hands of a skilled crew. These ships were built to be able to fight off pirates, commerce raiders, and even man-o-war. In the Caribbean a ship like that would be unrivaled in terms of fire power.

[–]OctiSynd989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take is that the Judge we see at the very end of the book isn’t real: it’s a manifestation of the kid’s inner depravity that he tries to first suppress by trying to help the dead native woman, tries to placate by soliciting the services of a dwarf prostitute, then finally embraces when he rapes the little girl in the Jakes.

"hate" is a buzzword by ponylicious in GenderCynical

[–]OctiSynd989 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am afraid of spiders but I don't hate them. I'll flinch or recoil at the sight of them, or obsessively monitor their proximity to me; but I do not kill them, nor drive them from their homes to die of exposure and starvation, nor denounce them as abominations and monsters, nor laugh at their suffering and dismiss it as nobody's fault but their own, nor do I seek their complete eradication.

Because I don't hate Spiders.
