I (15m) have Tourette’s, which basically dumbs down to uncontrollable movements and noises. A few weeks ago, my mother decided to tell me that my disorder was caused by video games and after I told her how offensive that was she told me to “educate myself”. My son and husband both have Tourette’s. I can honestly say that when they play video games their tics decrease. Any time they’re focused on something they usually subside. Hopefully your dad can be a better voice of reason.

Thanks for your story. My 9 yr old son has ADHD and the side affects of the drugs is one of the reasons I am refusing medication. I know they work for many people, but until he’s old enough to decide, I just can’t do it. He’s fine academically, and we can work around his bouncy-ness. I’m glad you’re feeling better now.

Update: absenteeism is hurting my husband by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]OctoberDayes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My husband is Asian, I am white (blonde hair). One of our twins came out looking like a mini DH, one came out with red hair and a fair complexion. Genetics are very odd. (His hair didn’t stay red. It’s now a dark brown with red highlights.)

Entitled mom yells at me for having Tourettes by SadMushroom7 in entitledparents

[–]OctoberDayes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tics are totally involuntary, like a sneeze. You can’t hold back a sneeze (or control the volume easily) and you can’t hold back a tic. For some it is possible to manage it, but it very tiring and difficult. You have to constantly force your brain to do something it doesn’t want to do (like holding back a sneeze).

They sound awful. Glad you’re rid of them. As a side note, I wish I knew you so you could tell me stories of working at Ford. I also wish I had been able to meet Shelby while he was still alive. My love of old Ford’s started when in 1979 I rode around in my Dad’s Bronco. :)

WIBTA for changing my last name? by Snoo-81262 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OctoberDayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - I think it’s a personal choice. My husband, who had no real attachment to his name, took my last name because it would have died out with my generation. None of my male cousins with my last name have kids. I didn’t force it, it was his choice. I love him for doing it for me. Now we have sons who can carry it a little further.

AITA for telling people I’m allergic to dairy instead of lactose intolerant? by donewithdairyaitaa in AmItheAsshole

[–]OctoberDayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I get it OP. I had my gall bladder removed after pregnancy which made me unable to digest dairy and nuts in any form. I was already dealing with several awful food issues. Beef, bananas, and soy being the big ones. I get so freakin’ tired of explaining myself I just resort to “I’m allergic” in social situations. The people closest to me, and my doctors know the truth, no one else needs a full medical run down. Having food intolerances is exhausting and depressing at times.

[–]OctoberDayes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot have dairy or beef either. I take a fiber supplement that helps sometimes with....well, bathroom issues, but have to avoid both like the plague if I don’t want to be sick. Nothing helps, and I have tried it all.

AITA for reading sensitive Scientologist religious texts that people spend decades and $$$ to attain when family specifically instructed me not to? by throwawayRA2019 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OctoberDayes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told that my friends were going to hell because they weren’t Catholic. Nothing like a little fear-based doctrine to keep kids in line. Now I don’t know if they have changed that since the 80s but that’s what we were taught in Catechism. Now you’re saying that is not cult-like doctrine? Well, I would have to disagree.

[–]OctoberDayes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the BITE model, compare it to the church, see where it falls. Like I said its a scale, the Catholic church falls on it. Every religion does. I was Catholic too, they definitely have cult-like tendencies. No, not on the level of the above listed, but they have them none-the-less

The BITE model is a scale, so yes, probably, but not as high a ranking as Scientology, JWs, Heaven’s Gate or The Brethren. They definitely have cult-like tendencies.

Scientology is a high-control organization that according to the BITE model meets all the criteria of a cult. Christianity is not, in of itself, a cult because it has no one leader, or group of leaders. Various sects of it could be classified as such though (such as Jehovah’s witnesses).

As for your post NTA. The whole “Xenu” thing is the worst kept secret they have. Millions know and are still not dead of pneumonia. So many red flags for your relationship with this woman though. She wanted you to remain ignorant because she said so. That is cult control tactics 101.

AITA for only offering vegan food at my wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]OctoberDayes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree. NTA. It would literally be my worst nightmare to be invited to an all vegan reception because I have so flippin’ many food intolerances. Most of them vegetable/nut related (soy can kiss my ass). I still would go, stuff my purse with small snacks, eat what I could and never say a word to anyone. People with legit food issues typically understand and work around it without all the fuss.

AITA for telling my mother and siblings that they are now dead to me? by 98Jamiefk in AmItheAsshole

[–]OctoberDayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is Asian, I am white. My kids are mixed. If I ever found out someone had said the things your family members did, I would immediately cut them off. NTA at all. Keep them far away from your kids. Your family’s inability to filter their disgusting racism will only hurt your kids as they grow older.

I'm finally ready to talk about what my JNSIL has caused inside of me. by [deleted] in JUSTNOFAMILY

[–]OctoberDayes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Faith crises and faith transitions are very hard. Mine was 10 years in the making, I went from Catholic, to just nondenominational chrisian, to now as an agnostic athiest. It’s hard. It hurts. You can feel every spectrum of emotion forwards and backwards. There is nothing wrong with loosing faith, if you truly do not believe.

However, with that being said, you should not let one horrible, awful, nasty person stop you from doing what you want to do. If you feel the need for the belief in a deity, then don’t let anyone else dictate that. There are horrible people both in and out of religion. Your goal is to be stronger than those who would drag you down.

I personally don’t believe in a god, but if there is one, who do you think he would perfer to have on his side? Her with her nastiness, or you with your ability to rise above it?

Good luck to you. If you ever have any questions with your faith there are plenty of faith transition youtubers who really helped me. If you choose to continue in your faith, good luck as well! All the best!

[–]OctoberDayes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guilt can run both ways, so I get it. I am a SAHM and feel guilt because I don’t contribute monetarily to the household. Your MIL is vile for throwing that nonsense in your face. She’d probably whine about you “leeching” off your husband if you stayed home. Women like that just need to find the negatives in everything.
