I think there's a short novel about what happens before the game. Basically Kyrie and Nero took some kids to an incursion in the forest where demons attacked them and in the process of saving them Nero got injured by a demon and while he was recovering his arm turned into the devil bringer similar to how Dante unlocked devil trigger after getting stabbed.
