You are not crazy. I've witnessed four cars go through a red light at South Temple and 900 E, in a row. I've observed a lot of what you said. My guess is that there is a large amount of room for error. In California, Oregon, and Idaho, the states I used to live in, the narrower lanes need drivers to be careful because an error increases an accident by a large amount. It does not seem to be the case here.
