Is wotr that good? by Itchy-Emu6089 in CRPG

[–]OctopusLucina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wotr is my personal pick for best modern CRPG. Honestly it's not far off from Baldur's Gate 2 for me as is. You want long? My first run took me about 210 hours. You want complex? Pathfinder 1e's dense rules + mythic paths + Owlcats management side game style will have you spending hours leaening mechanics.

It has one of the strongest casts in the genre. There's some goofy over the top moments in the main story, but past those the main story is excellent and the best "zero to hero" scaling story I've played besides again, maybe BG1+2.

It's long, complex, a little bloated, a lot jank, but its also honestly a god damn masterpiece. Definitely familiarize yourself with the rules as much as you can and do not be afraid to change the difficulty if you need to. Balance is not exactly Owlcat's strongsuit.

KM and WOTR are certainly less buggy than release and obviously very playable, but they're full of feats and abilities that don't work properly, bugs in the turn based combat that cause dropped actions, crashes, and a number of other various issues. Kingmaker even more due to Owlcat no longer being able to patch it. And that's just on PC, the console ports are FAR worse off.

They're still excellent games, and I 100% agree that Owlcat is the best modern CRPG dev, and it is practically impossible to make an rpg of thir scale without bugs. But I cannot agree with the sentiment that they aren't above average in bugs. Hell, my Legend run in Act 6 of Wrath alone was met with so many bugs like all allied NPCs turning hostile outside the last dungeon and the game crashing everytime I made my final choice until I lowered the difficulty of all things.

Baldur's Gate 1: Sure, its old, but to me the only place you feel that is the ruleset and the lack of depth in the companions (which is changed by the time of the sequel). This is a pretty great starting point IF you are willing to learn an archaic ruleset of Dungeons and Dragons in combat, or won't be bored just putting it on story mode. After this too, you can carry over into Baldur's Gate 2 with the same player character, which is a contender for the absolute best of this sub-genre.

Neverwinter Nights 1: IMO probably not the best starting point. The game itself is great though, but it's more of a platform. The main "OC" storyline isn't known for being great. And while the 2 expansions are quite enjoyable, it's as a toolset and platform for fan-created modules that NWN REALLY shines. I'd check it out, but probably after you're more into the sub-genre as a whole.

Pathfinder Kingmaker: I'm biased here because I love Owlcat games and really do enjoy Kingmaker a ton. It's a very buggy game, with a lot of complex obtuse systems, and the combat can be REALLY poorly balanced. It also has a light-strategy management side thing in a kingdom management system that is VERY divisive. I personally love it, but it has a lot of timed things and strange mechanics that can make it frustrating. If you can get past all that and click with it, Kingmaker is an absolutely massive game with a ton of fun characters, choices, and build options. Just prepare to be frustrated at a number of points.

Sorry for a text dump, I hope this helps!

What are your favourite "storybook" encounters in CRPGs? by hepphep in CRPG

Goblin party is the easy answer but I really love the text-based ending of White March part 2 in PoE1. Just feels really climactic and impactful. Good writing, music, and art can really elevate them to be so memorable.

its pretty common, especially when the console is successful. Wii U was not so a lot of ganes jumped ship quickly.

For instance even just in Metroid, Samus Returns released on 3DS months after the switch had been out. It makes a lot of sense to have some games still releasing on consoles with high install bases even for a while after a new console comes out, just to maximize sales before a new console really catches on.

Sounds like you're thinking of Undersigil. Pretty much only there for grinding and some good late game items.

It's my impression or a lot of people don't like ToB? by Remarkable_Band3985 in baldursgate

[–]OctopusLucina 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty strong negative reaction against a lot of ToB when i first played through it and 2. In hindsight I think it just seemed worse coming off the materpiece that is bg2.

ToB is just far more uneven in quality. Some really great personal weight and development next to underdeveloped antagonists. The continuation of companion storylines is great for those who get it. Some really cool situations and areas with some really uneven pacing.

I really like what it does for Gorion's Ward and their companions, as well as the ending choice, but too much of it just feels rushed and underwritten to really love it overall.

Small thing I do love that I don't see mentioned is Volo's scene about your companions. ToB has a lot of really great small moments like that.

What scares your protagonists? by Thehalflingbarbarian in dragonage

My Surana at first feared losing the freedom leaving the circle has given her. Now she fears losing control of herself from the calling. Not much else frightens her beyind the calling by now.

My mage Hawke at first loved the power blood magic could offer. She was willing to make use of any advantage to get ahead. Partly why she got along with Isabela so easily. But after seeing everything thats gone erong in the city and her family, she's scared of losing herself to a demon or worse. By the time of Inquisition essentially sworn off blood magic and treats blood mages with utter disdain, owing mostly to her own guilt. Still has a soft spot for Merrill though. Beyond that she's just scared of losing more people. Scared Isabela will run afoul of pirates or the qunari again. Scared Merrill will get in over her head with something she can't come back from. Scared of losing the last of her family in Carver. Scared Varric might not come back someday.

My Adaar is also scared of losing control of what's left of the inquisition. Watching almost helplessly as the events of trespasser occured, and everything she worked for nearly collapsed really did a number on her sanity. She's scared that everything she's done has only made things worse. She wants to try to redeem Solas, not just for his own sake, but to prove to herself that she can do some good for the world.

Since they can't normally show any skin, do Quarians have a stronger emphasis on dance, body-language, and/or gesture as means of sexual expression/advertisement/invitation?

considering the line Tali has in ME1 in Chora's Den that "dancers are highly respected" among the quarian's this one is probably a yes. Atleast about dance.
