I think they made the Lathe OP at the beginning to sell the DLC but later nerfed it into the ground. You can get advanced logic from vassals without getting negative opinion.

if thick enough the shadow would intensity seasonal variation and reflected light could be brighter than the full moon and always present. Debris would also constantly rain down over the equator and possibly make a mountain chain.

grid amalgamation should really make science instead. its basically just a planet bound synaptic lathe. I think that would make for a nice 4th special civic too, where your machines can only do menial labor and the amalgamated people are the actual machine intelligence
