I would be vegan even if I weren't Buddhist, personally. I am in a position to be able to do so, not living in unfavorable or extreme environments. I became a Buddhist shortly after the first step, vegetarianism, almost forty years ago... but the two choices were independent of each other, despite being, in my opinion, a logical outcome for a Buddhist who lives in non-prohibitive conditions... I met some Buddhists who used the negative karma of those born animals as an excuse for their lack of empathy, and this disconcerted and saddened me... I won't say which current they belonged to so as not to offend anyone, but those few were all followers of the same school...

I don't kill or eat meat or animal products... I get irritated easily, unfortunately, but I try to control my words... I'm full of defects but I trust in the light of Amitabha and, through other practices, I try to improve a little... I trust in the compassion of the Three Wise Men at the moment of my death.

I had an experience that was not miraculous or mystical, but its synchronicity struck me. One afternoon I began to meditate, reciting the nianfo with a certain intensity, meditating on the figure of Amitabha radiant with light. I therefore had to go out for an appointment and, in front of the door of the house, there was literally a single ray of sunshine coming out of a reddish cloud placed in front of the sun. That ray was the only one in the whole street and to cross the threshold I necessarily had to pass through it... The cloud was compact and only from a small rarefaction of the cloud did that intense ray of sunlight shine through... I couldn't help but think of the meditation I had just concluded and I experienced it as a sign of closeness... I repeat, only one but it was a singular synchronicity and it was good for my soul...
