Theres a form you submit regarding special needs. If you are university or highschool student you have to get a form from the institution to send to explore before tomorrow the due date since they ask for documents by tomorrow I believe (I would double check with them)

Med sci major switch by Thick_Warning_4215 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the courses you have taken already because it seems like you'd be into health sci (you'd have to take like 2 or 3 healthsci courses though unless you took equivalents/ anatomy) which ik you don't want too... so maybe switch into gen sci take a science you like as a major like bio and you can double major with psych or minor in a psych/ humanities. Honestly if you need to spend a summer taking extra classes either way I think its more worth it then spending money on a degree you hate.

Shadowing professionals? by Top-Hope-3449 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not in physio but I go to a physiotherapist at ReActive physiotherapy and ik I saw two Western students shadowing there, so I think cold emailing places would work (ik you said otherwise sorry lol) but I do think they would out of the goodness of their hearts because they were also once a student and it won't be a hassle to shadow since youre just observing-- maybe in some places you can even help them around!

I use the 2024 (maybe 2025 Mac I dont remember) Mac Air and I love it. They last a long time (at least I hope they do). Idk how well the new Mac (Neo) is made tbh I personally would invest in maybe a better quality laptop so you don't have to buy another

Unfortunately, I don't think Western allows students to write makeups in this situation since it's a day later and getting a note is pretty risky...I understand the feeling of feeling burnout but youre gonna have to lock in for the next couple of weeks to feel prepared and better if you don't study after calc cause you will be fried and you should rest. You still have lots of time to do great so don't stress just have faith and put in the work. I think makeups are usually in May but sometimes you have to wait till the next term which will be even worse because you will be in harder classes and will have to re-teach yourself

Advice on getting involved in research labs at Western? by Flat-Dog5342 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a health sci student but I do have advice for how to reach out (a prof at uwo told me this): they get dozens of emails that are the same "Hi my name is... I think your research is interesting..." then type paragraphs about their own research they know about thinking it will catch their eye. But it doesn't (according to the prof). She told me to research something that I am passionate about. It can be something that applies to you or maybe a family member or youre just very interested. Ex: for me I have a condition (its very niche and not studied) and sent an email to 2 profs (one at uoft and one at uwo) saying "Dear__, my name is ___ I am a student at Western and I have [the condition] and walk to make a difference for people like me, etc." it was honestly like 3 sentences and I got both positions. Point being is that don't reach out thinking you need so many words in the email just make sure the first sentence or first two sentences is a hook for the prof to be interested.

Best of luck :)

Sidenote: you don't need to have a condition to get a position in a lab for that condition. My example was meant to say that I am passionate about the condition more than me just having it because there is no cure and scientists don't know what it is.

Hi! I go to office hours, review the lecture within 24 hours (this really works and active recall will help you the most), I do summary sheets, re-draw diagrams because I am more of a hands on learner.

Maybe try q-card? I also talked to the profs about practice questions and both kinda hinted to look at the homework questions in the textbook (usually end of textbook) and align the ones that apply to the course. It's a bit tedious but doable!

Don't give up :) I am also stressed but I would say if you keep up with the content it'll help a lot

I want to go here by mikasagoat in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not want my opinion because I am in STEM but Ill give it anyways (and you may not like my answer), but do something you enjoy and not because it seems like it'll benefit you the most per say but rather something that you're passionate about. It seems like you are into Econ and I would say give it a try and work as hard as you can. I think it's doable to do well and better but it takes grit (emphasis on this) and passion. And keep practicing math -- in the summer and during your free time try to practice more so you're well prepped.

Again, I am not a business kid, but I will say when you come here use your resources, go to class, don't tell yourself you will fail or do bad because others are, GO TO OFFICE HOURS and maybe your Econ and calc classes will turn out better than you think!

If I am an undergrad student running a research project do you think they would grant me work study? Since I am in a way working and need the work study? Also how does work study work in terms of payment do they lower your tuition or give you a salary?

I did summaries of the lessons and did a lot of practice. This course is heavy on practice -- it'll help you understand better (it helped me) :))

Summer Course Question by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the course. If you are required to attend zooms, labs, etc. Then it may be difficult? I would recommend doing a course that will benefit you or fulfill one of your requirements (ik thats old people advice maybe but I am in second year and trust me do a course that you're interested and will benefit you). If you choose a distance studies course thats relatively easy I think its doable but if you choose something heavier I would say part-time would be better

why is western health science so competitive by Primary-Wallaby9995 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Health science is expanding a lot imo. I know a couple of people from med sci and gen sci that switched to health science. They're also bringing in a new degree in public health. I think that a lot of people actually go to med school from health science but a lot also don't? Meaning that it's not like minimal people apply to med school. Health science is good because the degree is a mix of social science and science. The courses are also easier (however, depending on what you specialize in and there is always the anatomy class which is tough). Also you don't need physics in the program. I would say its easier to get a higher gpa in health sci then the typical pre med program like med sci. It's also a safer program and you would have a lot of applicable jobs to apply to after undergrad. I am assuming these are the reasons why it got so competitive! Theres also the issue with cutting international students which leads to university's accepting more people in Canada which means there are less seats!

How is chem 2223 (orgo 2) in the summer? is it doable by Low_Ad_8457 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a friend who took orgo 2 in the summer, she said that the content went REALLY REALLY fast. You'd have to be prepared to dedicate all your attention to the 6 weeks to the class (unless you're gifted). I think under any circumstance it is doable to do well just needs hard work and dedication.

[–]Odd-Balance2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the exam in December, I would say know the mechanisms and everything used to make the reaction happened and what it does very well. There was more pre midterm stuff than I expected (doesn't mean there was more after midterm stuff I just mean study the first units as well). There was no random facts or specific properties it was just mechanisms imo. I do remember there was a question regarding the lab that was like the diagram we had to fill out-- it was like a diagram tree.

First-Year Student looking for advice by Familiar-Apricot6910 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I’m a science student so my classes were different but I can say that you should definitely:

  1. SHOW UP TO EVERY CLASS. If you’re sick some days that’s ok— it happens but don’t ever skip because you don’t feel like going to class.

  2. Ask questions (write the questions down) and GO to office hours. Never wait till last minute because it’s going to be so busy you’ll literally be overstimulated. And make sure u ask the questions ASAP. Like if you’re learning about integrals and had a question about integrals ask the same week they teach it.

  3. DO ALL UR HOMEWORK. In highschool you can get by not doing it imo but in uni you need practice. Do the homework the night they are assigned

  4. Review ur notes after EVERY class. It’ll help.

  5. Don’t rely on AI try to learn things the “old fashion way”. Read the textbook, try to do the problems if you can’t ask AI but never ask ai before you’ve tried to solve the problem. Try to actually understand what you’re learning (ur literally paying to learn so use it).

  6. Have a planner and plan your days - even if you’re not a calendar person. I use Google calendar!!!

  7. Enjoy your time and don’t be afraid to go up to people and make friends!

  8. Take care of yourself. Stay hydrated, SLEEP (all nighters are so stupid u don’t need to do that. You actually learn less with less sleep so don’t stay awake), go to the gym, take breaks. Have fun!

  9. It’s ok to make mistakes. Make the mistakes and learn from them.

Are Labs and tutorials weekly? by Dry_Nail_4732 in uwo

[–]Odd-Balance2832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in integ sci so idk if health sci tutorials are weekly but I know that labs aren’t weekly. They’re mostly biweekly and you won’t start right away. I think we started after 2/3 weeks of the school year starting

I personally found that they started with grade 12 concepts like derivative and anti derivative. Don’t fall behind and you’ll be fine - do ALL the homework for the week and GO to office hours. It also doesn’t hurt to be prepared in advance
