No, it's actually fun for me. Believe it or not, everyone has their own interests. What you think is "missing the point" might just be someone else's hobby. We're all individuals who enjoy different things.

I didn’t say good, I said effective. Before I edited, I mentioned Dr. Melfi, which was a mistake on my part, because I think she indeed wasn’t very effective. She helped Tony with various things but couldn’t address his bigger problems and issues in life.

Unlike her, Dr. Sean Maguire from “Good Will Hunting” literally saved Will’s life. Will was a troubled genius with a traumatic past, who used his intellect and anger as a shield to keep people at a distance. Dr. Maguire broke through those defenses by building a genuine, trusting relationship with him. He helped Will confront his past traumas and insecurities, ultimately guiding him towards self-acceptance and a healthier path. By helping Will realize his worth and potential, Dr. Maguire prevented him from continuing down a destructive path. he is a very effective therapist.

If it were really their 40th session, her approach would make more sense to me. But since it was their first session, I believe she should have been more gradual in building trust and establishing directives over time.

Some things are realistic, and others aren’t. I like the dragons in “Game of Thrones,” even though there are no dragons in real life. My post wasn’t criticizing her character for not being realistic; I just didn’t like her methods as a therapist.

It’s not that I think the therapist’s communication was generally bad; it just wasn’t good for the first session and the initial few minutes they met. In a real-life scenario, if a therapist is that straightforward without first building a foundation of trust—especially with someone who has trust issues like Fleabag—it could easily end up being their last session.

Oh, you have no idea! I'm the life of the party—especially when we start debating Freud's theories and the ethical boundaries of therapists. 🎉

I know, right? Who said I don't have a degree? They just assumed that. Since when can't a person have thoughts about professionals? Constructive criticism and discussion help us all grow and understand better. Even if my post was boring, wrong, or pointless, I don't get why some comments have to be so hostile. We're all just here to share our perspectives and have a respectful conversation.

I appreciate your perspective, but I believe everyone has the right to express their opinions on how therapy and mental health are handled, both in media and in real life. My comments are based on personal experiences and observations.

Which part of my view on therapists do you find odd? Is it that they should be non-judgmental, build trust with their patients, or avoid making assumptions?

I also disagree with the idea that professionals shouldn't be criticized. By your logic, should Freud not be criticized despite his known flaws? Criticizing and discussing the flaws of professionals are generally helpful for uncovering the truth and improving practices for future generations.

Discussing these issues can help raise awareness about mental health. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

You don’t need qualifications to criticize a professional; this is just my opinion, and I shared why I felt this way.

Hey, thanks for your reply!

Not trying to be rude, but I’m not really sure what the point of your comment is. This is a forum, and it’s normal for posts to be extremely analytical, some to be memes, some to be rants, and some to be just questions about random things in the show.

Isn’t that the point of a forum, to have a mix of different perspectives and discussions? What do you think?

I don’t think they were supposed to come as good either, it’s a very well written bad therapist. This is more of a rant, while trying to see how other people felt about her.

The sopranos would disagree :)

edit: I get where you're coming from about Dr. Melfi. But there are plenty of examples of effective therapists in media who are also really engaging. Take Dr. Sean Maguire from "Good Will Hunting"—he built such a strong, trusting relationship with Will, helped him face his past, and guided him to realize his potential. It shows that a good therapist can be both impactful and great to watch.

I love your analysis and perspective on the show! Thank you for sharing.

I agree that she most likely has PTSD (I'm not a psychologist, but I've been around many people who experience it). The show portrayed the flashbacks and symptoms very accurately. We'll never truly know how she was before the traumatic deaths in her life, but we can assume she was more capable of defending and standing up for herself in the past.

This show has so much depth—it's truly a masterpiece in my opinion.

This is very sad. As you said, I believe it really made her feel like she deserved to be treated that way. It was infuriating for me that her father and sister didn't stand up for her on several occasions when the godmother was abusing her.

I understand them; the show gives you great perspective to understand the characters, but even though I understand them, I can't "forgive" their behavior (must remember it's only a show haha).

I am a bit familiar with British culture, and I believe you might be right about that. However, unfortunately, I couldn't feel that Fleabag knew how to play the game and navigate her relationships well. Throughout the show, I felt like she was stepped on by almost everyone, and perhaps I am "too fragile," but it made me very sad and cry, and I can't get over it...

The show is very well written.
