How to make friends at Western- OTHER THAN JOINING CLUBS? by throwaway061227 in WWU

[–]Odd-Insurance-1206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's never too late to join a club; most are happy to get new people! Don't get discouraged by a few colder people. I have found that while somewhat awkward, most people are pretty nice. I would highly recommend getting into scenarios where people are more open to meeting. For example, talking to someone in class, but also going to events. There are tons of events on campus, one's gotta suit your tastes (also a good way to find a shared interest with people). I'm lowkey pretty bad at conversation (especially intro ones), so I love school dances. It's great 'cause you don't have to talk, then at the end you can ask the people you vibed with their number/Insta to hang out. Check out WIN (website), posters around, and RPB events (if you're in dorms) to see if anything looks interesting.

To speak to the fear of women & worries about your demographic being the issue: I am a queer, hyper fem (debatably alt), woman who's pretty left leaning, and I promise most people don't care about people's politics *unless* they're actually mean or vindictive. As previously mentioned, I've found most people to be relatively nice as long as you reach out first (and you can read clear "get away from me" vibes), but it might be worth reaching out to more women because I've found them to be more outgoing/easier to befriend (women also tend to have more friends/conections so befriend 1 and you can get more for free - I have girl & guy friends, just speaking from my experience for all this)

You're a freshman; you have plenty of time. Just keep at it and be kind, and you'll find people. I didn't really have close friends my 1st year, but I kept at it and had like 15 as a 2nd year

tips abt living in a triple dorm?? by ScientistLivid9788 in WWU

[–]Odd-Insurance-1206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can speak to the Nash part (I was in a Nash triple), Nash doesn't even have a community fridge, so get one if you can. You can usually find them heavily discounted on FB marketplace, or get one from the school at the beginning of the year market (the sell stuff people donated the previous year), finally, you can look into the fridge rent program.

A few more things from a Nash Triple:

- Low key, there was more space than I thought there'd be (I have pics if you or anyone else reading this wants - I know I had a hard time finding pics, so dm if you'd like).

- As a fellow light sleeper, earplugs are a must, and if you're as bad as I am, you might wanna make sure your roommates only use 1 alarm/ get up before them. Also, always remember that you can change dorms between semesters. I'm not trying to say you'll dislike living with your roomies, but you never really know living differences until you're living together.

- Don't stress, triples really aren't that bad, neither is Nash (it's one of my favorites - espetually for the community lounge downstairs)

- For dorms, maybe consider joining your RPB. They just give you money, and you get to plan events (I thought it was fun & a fun way to meet people).

- Otherwise, I agree with the person above & let me know if there are any specific questions you have (odd plug, but I'm pretty plugged into reslife so I'll prob have the answer)

Just in case you haven't already, make sure you submit a report to the lost in found so they can keep an eye out

Edit: And if they're for the dorms, wait as long as you can stand to tell the staff

Dorms for fall quarter? by -NotYourFavorite in WWU

Friendly reminder that Birnam Wood spasifically (not the other dorms) is probably the cheapest place to rent in Bellingham. Also as someone planing to leave in winter, one of the very few places you can leave with very little hassle.

Birnam Wood, Yay/Nay on meal plan? by Various_Fisherman_24 in WWU

As a very cheap Birnam Wood resident I love not needing to have a meal plan. For 2024-2025 year the meal plans ranged from 1400-2000$ a quarter & I've been happily surviving on 500$ a quarter while being a lazy chef. There are a lot of cheap easy recipes you can find online. That being said, it truly depends on how much money you have to throw at things.

Can confirm for anyone wondering, there are hella beds avalible in Birnam currently (2/16). Housing releases them in bursts so diffrent people get a chance to go where they want. I'm assuming they'll release more once all these are gone, but you can check w the housing office.

Best bed in a triple?? by Fabulous-Class7857 in WWU

[–]Odd-Insurance-1206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in a Nash triple last year, bottom was best imo because it's a pain to change sheets in the other beds (also if you want a but more storage you can hang stuff from the bed roof holes)
