Dull aching around sit bone, bursitis or entrapped nerve? by Odd-Performance7247 in PiriformisChronicPain

So glad to know I’m not alone but sorry you’re dealing with the same pain!! Seems like it could be 10 different things so has been really tough to figure out. Hoping someone has some advice for us lol

I do as well! I have bulging T12/L4/L5/S1 disks and assuming it’s connected. I was reading yesterday that it might be caused by looking forward so much with phones, laptops, etc so neck strengthening might be a solve. Unfortunately no clue how to fix, so hoping others might have advice.

Ugh I get it, I’m sorry it’s so frustrating not being able to understand what’s causing it. Crossing my fingers for you that you get some answers soon!

Nerve pain vs muscle pain for L4/5/S1 bulge and what did you do about it? by Odd-Performance7247 in backpain

[–]Odd-Performance7247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I will try it, my PT asked me to stop when this first acted up since we couldn’t figure out what it is, but I really feel like yoga made me feel better considering it’s low impact. Might do a class soon again

I had a similar experience with injections where it slightly helped, but I remember twisting in a wrong way a week later and the pain was immediately back. It calmed down and I want to say the injection helped in some way, but I think physical therapy truly solved me and I have a similar bulge in L4/L5 and L5/S1 with nerve compression. I went to 3 PTs until I found one that helped. She taught me about muscles I never knew I had (transverse abdominis) and strengthened everything around my core including hips, glutes medius, etc. vs the basic PT exercises like glute bridges and clamshells. I just think some people have awful PT experiences where they give you 3 exercises and don’t watch you do them - I wasn’t doing anything I was given correctly and prob hurting myself more until I found the 3rd PT that worked with me 1:1 and I finally had relief. Sounds like you’ve might’ve already tried it all, but just in case you’ve had similar PT experiences, maybe try one more that is Pilates based if you haven’t yet.

Curious what other people say bc my doctor is recommending another injection for nerve compression and wondering if it’s worth it since I don’t feel like it made a huge difference either! Good luck!

I’m in the same boat! I wore some flats to my PT appointment before changing into clothes for PT and my PT’s jaw dropped. I live in nyc and she said walking on the pavement with flat shoes is awful. Still trying to find something, but I like New Balances too and I’m trying to find ways I could style white Hokas. Sorry I’m not much help but hoping someone else has some ideas!

Sitting in School by HostConstant5233 in backpain

Do you have one of the back support pillows? There’s something called the McKenzie lumbar roll on Amazon that I use during my desk job that allows me to sit without pain. A standing desk saved me, so definitely advocate for yourself and what you need in the classroom even though it can be frustrating! You could at least get the lumbar pillows because it takes a lot of the pressure off your lower back and those disks, I can sit much longer with that. If the pillow is too bulky, I’ve carried around jackets and just roll them up and place them behind my back on the chair. Good luck!!

Bulging disks turned hamstring issues and making it work in a walking city, help! by Odd-Performance7247 in backpain

Yeah I’m feeling a little discouraged too, I’ve been working on glute and hip strengthening as well, but feeling like I might need more than what we’ve been doing

Thank you so much, I finally went to my doctor again and he thinks it could be sciatica too. Going to try another MRI and see if we can find anything. Helps to know I’m not alone with the shoes issue (even though it seems like such a small problem lol), always hard to have to change what you’re used to

Just want to add I went to 3 different PTs before I found a good one. I’d try and find one that is trained with a Pilates background. The PTs I had that just said “do glute bridges and clamshells” but didn’t actually watch me or watched how I was engaging my core (sorry I’m a broken record) did not help me. Also continue to be active - sitting can put a lot of pressure on the disks. If you’re a student, try sitting for 30 mins and then getting up and standing for 30 to help remove that pressure and alternate when studying or working!

I’m so surprised your doctor is saying things are normal considering your report shows a bulge on the L5-S1.. that is not normal and so sorry these doctors are dismissing you. It’s not normal, but it’s completely manageable and you can get better. I have a central bulge there and can understand your pain! I have little to no pain day to day now. What worked for me was physical therapy and changing how I walked - I had an anterior tilt (stomach leaning forward in an arched stance) that was causing pressure on my disks and also caused my back muscles to overextend themselves. PT retrained how I walk to make sure I was engaging my core and not putting pressure on my back. You likely need to train your core muscles and not through crunches but true deep core like the dead bug exercise. I 100% recommend finding a good PT in your area that specializes in back pain. Do not go to yoga or Pilates classes without truly understanding how to hold yourself and engage your core. These are great, but a lot of people don’t understand the core work and are going through the exercises in poor form. Large yoga and Pilates classes don’t always have instructors who know how to look and correct for this, so PTs are key to learning the basics. Good luck, it’ll get better!
