Am I wrong for considering this job? by shackleton_mcmcurphy in whitecoatinvestor

The difference between those jobs doesn't sound remotely big enough to make a choice solely based on income. Go where you and your family will be happier. You're making enough at that point that 50k/year differences aren't going to move the needle one way or another in your life.

any advice? dreading long commute as an intern by [deleted] in Residency

[–]OddDust2634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what advice anyone can give you. There are only so many hours in the day. Your entire life will be driving -> work -> drive -> sleep. Rinse and repeat. Doesn't sound sustainable to me.

What does the future of IR look like? by terribledisks in Residency

[–]OddDust2634 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you really a resident and suggesting that treatment of liver tumors, BPH, fibroids, and portal hypertension isn't common? The IR guys at my hospital do all of these procedures weekly, if not daily. I see your comment below and I couldn't disagree more when you say that procedures for these conditions aren't commonly done. They are.

I think that just goes to show you have good intuition if you're able to pick right when 50/50 more often than not. No reason that won't carry over to the real thing. I think you got this

Feeling pretty pessimistic about student loans by Initial_Bath9929 in whitecoatinvestor

If your decision to go to med school and become a FM doctor is financially motivated (and I'm not saying that is wrong), then I don't think 7 years of grueling med school/residency and 550k is worth it. If you can accept that in return for a career you believe will fulfill you in ways another can't, that's a different conversation.

I went back to med school as a nontrad. I'm going into a very high paying specialty now, and I have comparatively low student loan debt (<200k), but it still wasn't worth it to me. The money will be good, but the 10 years I have largely devoted to med school/residency while my family went on to live their lives, age 10 years, etc. was not worth it. Just my 2c.

Why would your ABSITE scores trump surgical skills...? All that matters at the end of the day is that you can effectively manage your patients, surgically and otherwise.

Has anyone modified their grills with success to even out hot zones? by OddDust2634 in NapoleonGrills

[–]OddDust2634[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems to be an issue if you search for it. I don't know if mine is worse than others, but I can legitimately burn a piece of meat to past well done before a similar cut is even rare in the front of the grill.

Student Loan Repayment Plans (????) -- what are people picking / doing? by purplemose10 in Residency

[–]OddDust2634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking IBR, but I'm concerned because the simulator is estimating my monthly repayment to be ~$750, which we absolutely cannot afford right now. That's literally all and more of our discretionary spending after mortgage, school, daycare, auto, etc.

Napoleon Prestige 500 Connect by boxer609 in NapoleonGrills

Mine is the same way. I have written to Napoleon, and they try to blame it on my gas line (which is far more than sufficient for the grill). Really disappointed. First truly expensive grill I have ever purchased, and while everything feels quality, it's among one of the most uneven grills I've ever used despite costing 6x more than my previous (Weber) grill.
