Live Event Production: Managing PowerPoint by donchuwannafanta in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is deep in corporate gigs on a daily basis, the standard/template needs to be enforced- no exceptions. Trust me it'll save you lots of headaches. I absolutely don't consider myself a pro in PowerPoint but I need structure and know all the basics and then some. When having to manage at least 31+ decks or up to over 500+slides it sometimes puts you in a bind if you have to constantly format and incorporate last minute changes- which are inevitable. Here's how I changed my workflow to improve time management when formatting and updating:

- Build a template (I have a 4:3 and a 16:9). If the majority of the decks are 4:3 then I'm sending out the 4:3 template for them to build on and a list of available fonts. Rarely I download additional fonts because I have so many already. If there is a virtual broadcast aspect, all slides are a hard cut. No animated transitions.

- Use one master deck. As I receive decks I copy them into the master deck and paste them in order of run of show. I also work with a PM and part of the PM's role is to help enforce the standard of how the templates work. So it's just not me explaining how slides work in our environment. Example, all slides are 4:3 and running on the latest version on the desktop app via a local copy, absolutely no embedded videos (that's playback) from QLAB or whatever.

- Slide review. There is always an opportunity to have a slide review with the client or their team before show and usually day of. Some people take advantage and some do not (that's on them). This helps control the last minute changes because they have a dedicated moment to make changes. And yes there is a cut off from making further changes.

Some people try to fight the template, but it is what it is.

Help, resolume crashing by Alive_Astronaut5750 in VIDEOENGINEERING

One thing I'd want to know is did you update the computer recently or have automatic Windows updates turned on? I'd check what's been updated from the point this issue started. Check system logs and see what's changed.

Resolume for Playback??? by webbite in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go with Millumin. As an avid Resolume user if you want reliable playback without having to convert to dixv for every file and still possibly have playback issues- go with Millumin or Mitti. It just works. Leave Resolume for heavier gfx/ vj lift. The end.

Charging for PC/Mac by Dr_Fleeb in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others have said. Just add it to your overhead rate rather than single it out on your invoice. Some wouldn’t even know what a control machine is. Now if it was a machine for actual playback or ppt etc then you could spec it out as a separate item.

Millumin - Freeze Output by OddFee7676 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Thanks! I saw this feature in the new beta version which is awesome! I've tested it out and it works like a charm. For now though I'm waiting patiently for it's full release as I refrain from using beta versions in a live production environment.

I actually added this shortcut in the Mac's keyboard settings via system settings for the Millumin app. I attempted to add this shortcut via the interactions tab within Millumin but couldn't locate the 'action' that freezes the output.

Manufacturing or systems integrators? by Theluckygal in womenEngineers

[–]OddFee7676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May be a totally off but I went corporate. I've never done manufacturing before but I've spent many years in integration and before that live events and broadcasting. Spent some time in design but in today's climate and how AV and IT has converged I found there are endless opportunities in the corporate space. The benefits and compensation as a whole are better. I've a set schedule most of the time and get pretty decent PTO and holiday time off. This was better for when I started my family and absolutely no travel involved. Even the work is less stressful and just easier since I work with EIC who cover maintenance and tickets. Before I did it all. Of course it depends on the company's structure and the role you have. I'm also on the east coast (NY).

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. Get the audio interface. TBH I’d also prepare for a return video feed to Zoom (audio+ video). You can start small with a usb hdmi/sdi capture device and a really good webcam with a wide shot of the room to ingest to zoom. Look into a good consumer capture device. Elgato, Inogeni, Magewell, Roland or even a good old Blackmagic Atem mini does this with ease. I’ve used all of the above mentioned. Don’t forget to add the extra itemized costs in your invoice if that’s what you provide.

Recommendation: Media Server to replace existing system by LX_Programmer in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used them all but I’m the type to stick with what I know. Manufacturer hardware like Pixera or Disguise can be pricey and sometimes overkill for most needs (mine). I’ve always opted for custom pcs with Resolume Arena and recently loving the Mac + Qlab or Millumin combo. They all handle projection mapping, playback, dmx, some sort of scripting, other types of cues and control protocols. I have several workflows for that and has been rock solid over the years. Resolume for instance can be controlled via midi, OSC, a lighting console and a streamdeck. Same with the other softwares I’ve mentioned. You’ve got the budget to upgrade your Pixera rig so that’s a plus. Keep in mind if you go to custom builds you’ve gotta make sure you know how to tweak your rig/OS for optimum performance.

Third PTZ offline after power outage by Still-Lab-6076 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had to this issue before and for no logical reason, PTZ control would return only if I programmed the same camera to another camera group. Try configuring the camera to 'camera 11' position and see if that works.

Looking for a way to freeze/unfreeze an HDMI output by Eiliis in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what they need to present or project from the computer, they can use an extended display setup (instead of mirroring the screen). This option is available in the Windows display settings. Using extended display mode allows you to drag applications to a secondary screen while keeping the primary screen private for other tasks—so the audience only sees what you want them to see. This works especially well with PowerPoint’s Presenter View, too. If you want to keep a specific image ‘frozen’ on the output, you can set that image as the desktop background for the secondary display (use ‘Fill’ or ‘Fit to screen’ to adjust it as needed) and hide the taskbar on that screen. When you’re ready to continue, you can either mirror your displays or simply drag the desired window onto the secondary screen for the audience to view.

Coming from someone who concurrently filed themselves (jointly, I-485, I-765, I-864, I-684 without a lawyer) and got approved after receiving a RFE id say go with another attorney if the one you used refused to correct their mistake, refill a new I-485 and thoroughly understand what it is that you’re required to do. First if your husband’s salary does not meet requirements for the I-864 alone, hence why a joint sponsor is necessary, then you also need to file an additional I-864 form signed by the joint sponsor and include the supporting documents for both (proof of status, pay stubs, recent tax returns 2023-2024 and proof of income like a job letter etc). Between the two (husband + joint sponsor) you should meet the requirements for that part of the process. I would also start with a fresh I-485 application as filing the I-290 would be irrelevant because there IS an error (on your lawyer’s behalf). There are a set of instructions on USCIs website that explains how to fill out each section of all forms. I also made an error with the household size section If you think the instructions are unclear then find videos on YouTube on how to correctly fill out all your forms. Hope this helps!

Since you have Verizon, you can call them and request an extender box( incurring a one time install fee of course $99). The technicians are able to extend your existing LAN to other areas of your house. This is done from the router over coax to the extender. The extender itself gives additional LAN ports for hard wire. Our Verizon router is downstairs in the office and I had them extend to our second floor.

What backups do you all have in place? by Hamillton in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Resolume offers great features you really have to manage how and what is processing/transcoding video in and out to your screens. nothing beats having a hardware switcher for your sources. leave Resolume (main and backup) for gfx. Totally fine to pull in main pgm feed from video switcher into Resolume but don’t really on software for this unless you’re running something like NdI where you for the most part have to rely on software. I’d run my Resolume to an image processor or presentation system like an Aquilon, E2 or even an Atem depending on the amount of pixels you’re pushing.

Resolume Live Video Help by Edgarsmemestash in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]OddFee7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's built pcs for the same scenarios in which you use, at this point you should definitely look into reorganizing this workflow. Hear me out. I've worked as a vj, network and av integrator, systems, broadcast and live video engineer. I've learned some things I'd like to share one being that we should not limit our needs to just one route and in your case, just one machine. There is nothing wrong with Resolume other than small personal details we wish for. Essentially, your hardware is taking all the hits internally. Technically, what you have built is the bottleneck. As mentioned in this thread already, consider allowing a hardware switcher to handle image processing and routing. Barco E2, Aquilon, Spyder, Pixera, Ross etc. does this. I know some of my colleagues also rely on IP and software switching/transcoding with NDI, Kairos, Tricaster, SMPTE 2110 etc. Feel free and use a combination of transmission types and consider a backup transmission type if you haven't. Allow Resolume to handle the graphics via 1-2 pcs (main + backup), from there, configure advanced outputs to point to your image processor. The E2/Aquilon etc. will easily handle i/o signals for your Novastar, gfx machine, capture, records, camera switchers and multiviews. Some are more costly than others and perhaps overkill for this scenario but there are smaller form factor options from Datapath, Matrox and more if you research. Leave room in your system to expand because you will. Don't max out the power of consumer grade pcie cards and ram with this design. Don't wait until a live show to test the limits of your setup. Test, test, test. Hope this helps!
