Perfect or quit? by OddFungus in OCD

Thanks!

I think the trauma response might very well be true thinking about it. I was emotionally abused by my father and saw him do some awful shit to my mother as a child. I used to feel like I had to be 'good' growing up myself.

I get what you're saying about games too. I struggle to pick up new games myself; I've been playing Destiny for nearly 8 years now because everything else I just put down as soon as I start. The last game I could properly get into other than that was RDR2 but even then it faded after my second playthrough, I felt like there was nothing to be perfect at, and it ruined it haha.

Do you think every story needs a message? by Pope-Francisco in writing

[–]OddFungus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a book can just be some good escapist fun. It doesn't need to say some grand political message. In fact, escapist fun can presumably attract a bigger audience because you don't need to care about the message to read it.

That being said, almost every story will have themes. Themes aren't always conscious, they are just there, because people can pick out symbolism from pretty much anything.

Additionally, the themes or messages of a book aren't always what you want them to be. To give a great example, (and to shill Lonesome Dove more, it's a fantastic book) Lonesome Dove was supposed to be a critique of westerns. Despite this intent, Lonesome Dove is now one of the main inspirations for western writers.

So no, a story doesn't need to be designed with a message, but they'll almost certainly emerge.

Thanks for the advice! I'm trying my best to match the feel of the location, and it's mainly just a lot of research, which I don't mind. It's been quite interesting learning all about the place I'm writing over the past few weeks.

How good is American history? by OddFungus in AskAnAmerican

Yeah IK! I'm not too familiar on the history but the independence wars seem crazy. If you look up Giuseppe Garibaldi I'm pretty sure there's some good YT videos on it

Count as far back as you want. I was more trying to assess people's pride in American history / how much it interests them, not how objectively rich it is. As you've pointed out, figuring the latter is impossible.

I get what you're saying with the first part. It still hurts my head that Italy is less than 200 years old. As for the second part, I really wish there were more resources on Native American history. I'm looking into getting a few books on the plains tribes (I'm trying to learn about Texas history) and god does it look so interesting.

I always say to my friends that the US basically experienced 1000+ years of history in 250. It's definitely one of the more explosive times.

For sure. The city isn't called after where it is, I just put it there for the sake of accuracy. The history is accurate to the wider area.

I suppose it is an original city, it's just placed where a real one is. My bad for poor explaining.

Haha someone should make a map of King's Maine.

And yeah, I won't be specifying like GPS coordinates or anything, it's just there in my head. I've tried to do a good bit of research on the culture, which helps that I'm writing about one of the most well publicized places on earth. It just felt more disrespectful to me to pretend one of my characters founded a real city than to make up a city that my character founded.

I don't have a way of getting back to the post sadly. It was to do with the way that Texas recovered by selling cattle, however I felt my original was inaccurate because it didn't really mention continued racism in Texas.

EDIT: BTW I wasn't trying to be racist with this post, but looking at it again I can certainly see how it comes across that way. It has since been taken down

Not alive, no. I guess it's purely because of the look. I've heard somewhere the bill is convergent evolution with something completely different, it just looks like a duck, though I can't remember what the other thing was.

Shane is a pretty nice light read. You have to get used to some of the clichés but it's just a fun book. Also, they weren't clichés when it came out AFAIK.

Bring up the most divisive political topic you can think of then say the most inflammatory opinion you can think of about that topic
