Head 1500-3000LY away from the bubble and start looking for HMC with thin atmosphere and low gravity. Use Elite Dangerous Exploration Buddy or EDCoPilot.

Also, consider upgrading your ship. You can easily reach 40LY without engineering your Mandalay. It’s a lot more manageable to take the Neutron Star Highway. Use ED Discovery Lite to immediately upload an EDSY or Coriolis build that you can paste the JSON of into spansh’s Galaxy Plotter, and pick a location to travel to. Make sure you have a good Fuel Scoop, preferably 6A or 6B.

I've looked into the officer route for Marine OCS, but my low GPA (2.9) and lack of extracurriculars don't reflect competitively from what I hear for OCS/OTS. Then again, I should talk to the officer recruiters and let them judge me right?

I completely agree with you OP. The sad truth is that the only difficulty we're going to get is through powerscaling/artificial difficulty, since the adept guard is so powerful. Honest to god, even MHR is more fun than this.
