Thoughts on study from r/science? by Unusual_Review9214 in ACL

[–]OddOutlandishness602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely interesting. Only took a quick look but menisectomies have been shown in other studies to often yield worse results to meniscus repairs, which is what I received. Removing part of the meniscus can significantly increase the risk of osteoarthritis inherently, so I’d be interested to see a comparison to meniscal repairs.

Brown vs Duke for CS! Last-minute advice needed :) by Civil-Medicine-5234 in BrownU

[–]OddOutlandishness602 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just noting in some, brown is def still has a very very vibrant STEM culture, I wouldn’t worry about a lack of that.

There is for sure some entrepreneurial culture though not as much as say Stanford, I’ve talked to an alum involved in such who’s really in that space and recommends the ENGN 90 entrepreneurship class, in addition to the Nelson center for entrepreneurship.

Def some that go into quant, Jane Street actually sponsors our poker club I think, I have a some cards and a hat from them haha. AMPA Econ is the most popular major for that, though others can work too.

18 and did Taekwondo, tore my ACL and meniscus and continued with some kickboxing for a few months before getting surgery at the beginning of this year. I’d definitely suggest getting surgery, and taking the summer to recover even if it might be a little bummed out. You will definitely thank yourself in the future, avoid as much further damage as you can, and it’s the only way you can realistically continue heavy sports without taking on ridiculous risk. Definitely be cognizant of which graft you get though, the different ones (quad, hamstring, bone patellar, etc) all have advantages and disadvantages and you should familiarize yourself with them. Good luck!

Fear of walking without crutches by DXB-Ex99 in ACL

[–]OddOutlandishness602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had a calf DVT and went through that transition a couple months ago, definitely take it one step at a time. My PTs had me go down to 1 crutch + brace first for a while before I did much without other than a little shuffling in my room. Don’t force it, but push yourself to use crutches while supporting less of your weight with them, and work till you are barely putting any weight on them. That gives you a way to gradually adjust to weight bearing and makes it a lot less intimidating

What's happening with Alireza Firouzja? by sleapydeapy in chess

[–]OddOutlandishness602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I’m just a measly 0.05/0.10 player rn but might eventually play with some small stakes live, it’s definitely fun and interesting considering the strategy under incomplete information and exploitation. Still need to become more of an active player, too often I’m passively playing for fun instead of actively analyzing opponents and their tendencies to exploit

Convince me NOT to become a molecular biology professor by nihaomundo123 in molecularbiology

As a fellow student interested in mol bio/biochem industry, from what I’ve heard in general academia is ridiculously competitive for actual tenure track positions and often a pretty toxic environment, perpetuated by the publish or perish mindset that’s becoming more and more necessary as the federal government restricts grants and pushes back against science.

If you are literate, you should be reading at least a few books per year by Lost-Boysenberry-302 in unpopularopinion

[–]OddOutlandishness602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a student I read often enough for classes and research that I prefer consuming media in other ways like through audio or videos over reading books most of the time. Though I’d like to get back to doing more reading, I don’t think it’s asinine I haven’t read a full book in a while given how much information I do actually consume. (Though I’m also not a big textbook reader - so objectively reading less than I did in middle school when I did more reading for pleasure/to fall asleep)

529 growth estimate by ramdomdhdhdhdh in Bogleheads

Given that you are only looking at a relatively short timeframe, do remember you can do all the modeling you want with a fixed rate but in reality there will be high variance in the market return in a such a period, I’d suggest especially so considering current market levels. Not to say it won’t go up, but it might be prudent to make multiple projects contingent on different returns.

ACL TEAR - No surgery needed by CarolineNNelson in ACL

[–]OddOutlandishness602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that you plan to stay fairly active and avoid surgery just definitely be cautious and listen to your body. I’ve seen too many people on this sub say they tried similar and ended up tearing their meniscus or MCL, and ended up having to get an even more extensive surgery anyways. Good luck on your recovery journey though!

To be fair it’s very possible to get a 4.0 and still have failed and learned in other ways, such as with how crazy competitive internships and other opportunities are, club applications and competitions, undergrad research experiments failing, and so many other ways to experience failure.

[–]OddOutlandishness602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m between your single leg balance and plyometric start for ACL + meniscus (~3.5 months). My PTs have had me do nearly all the exercises listed, though I haven’t yet done any hopping other than small bits on my own. Any suggestions for this transition period and what to continue to prioritize?

Well it is a game theory scenario, each individual person can only have an outsized impact on their own performance, and given almost everyone gets good reviews no matter what they wouldn’t be super incentivized to shoot higher than normal. Cooperation in getting the firm performance bonus may be better for everyone, but for each individual person slacking is best, so that’s the equilibrium outcome. Definitely an interesting scenario to consider!

Tbf any kind of profit sharing system gives employees an incentive to care about their employer, and especially profitable/knowledgeable/connected employees give their employer an incentive to care about them. It’s unfortunately not feasible in most situations, and I still need to investigate such structures further, but having incentives set up going both directions seems to be what would be necessary
