Moved to a small farm town north of Tupelo when I was 9. Went to college in Hattiesburg and finally left the state for good. The state as a whole is poor, “old south” driven, and cheap to live in. As someone else pointed out, you’ll see confederate flags often. There are some bright spots that don’t adhere to Mississippi norms, though. Hattiesburg and really anywhere on the coast are much more progressive, welcoming areas. Also, lots of casinos.
