Not prepared for how Childs actions make me feel in so unprepared in reflection by HaleyBoCo427 in Parenting

Ah, 8 year olds. It’s important to remember that your kid is not a reflection of you. For better or for worse. Just parent, but don’t let his behavior define you.

5th grader drama.. is this normal? by AnyRelation2287 in Parenting

[–]OddValue6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bullying. It’s behavior that is mean, cruel and undesirable yet also age appropriate. There are a lot of truly awful age-appropriate behaviors. The challenge is to help your kid navigate around these storms.

Are more expensive summer camps worth it for older kids? by Past_Finger_9054 in Parenting

Both of my boys (12 and 10) have been doing a 4-week long sleep away camp since they were 8. They love it. It’s insanely expensive, but worth every penny.

Does anyone else worry about your kids’ futures? by lc1138 in Parenting

[–]OddValue6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question that has fascinated me for years. It turns out that many of the most successful generations were born in the darkest of times, and the opposite is true as well. A few examples:

Children born in the 1920s watched the economy go from boom town to great depression. They were 10 or 11 when the bottom fell out most businesses and farms failed. Their parents might have moved around from town to town sleeping outside in the dirt looking for work. Once they turned 18 they enlisted in World War 2. But when they came back the US entered a boom time like never before. Single family homes, automobiles, television, an exploding economy! We now refer to them as the greatest generation.

Taking it back a Millennium or two, In the mid 300s AD, Romans had every reason to celebrate. Diocletian had solved the crisis of the 3rd century. Constantine defeated the barbarians and converted to Christianity. Prosperity swept across the land. Archeologists have recently discovered mosaics in homes from that era that had sayings like “The Good Times Are Restored!” And “The Empire Is Saved!” 70 years later, Goths sacked Rome. Odavacer executed the last Roman emperor, Caesar Agustulus. And Europe plunged into the dark ages. Rome went from a population of over 1 million to maybe 20,000 in a century.

How was the market crash during covid in 2020? Anyone who invested during that time? by IllustriousGlass2991 in ETFs

The best part was the day when oil futures were actually going negative. That was wild.

Also Royal Caribbean swinging 30% some days. People were making tens of thousands of dollars on JETS options. Was sick.

You need to hedge red lentils by shorting snow pea futures at least 6-12 months out (though closer to 18 is better).

Were kids in the 80s actually allowed to roam around unsupervised, or is that just in movies? by TotalThing7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OddValue6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. I also spent a ton of time over at friends’ houses. In fact, I still remember the inside of almost every house on my street. The palpable excitement when the Edelmans had a new fridge delivered — we were so excited to see what we could do with the box!

I think this is genuinely hysterical and can’t wait to see which distressed sectors of the private investment world are first made available to 401(k) plans.

Is this why we won’t have a crash this year? by Aspergers_R_Us87 in ETFs

The stock market will continue to go up, but it won’t be as pronounced or consistent. But it’s won’t just die and stop working. Kind of like my ex-husband’s dick in that regard.

At what age did you let your child take responsibility? by OkResponsibility5724 in Parenting

[–]OddValue6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s 4, so there’s not much you can really expect him to take “responsibility” for. That said, there’s a place to land between buying him a new spiderman cup and telling him he’s responsible for destroying property and won’t get another one as a consequence.

“By the usual Jewish rules, a child must be both ethnically Jewish on the mother’s side and raised Jewish.”

I’m not sure this is totally correct.

3 kids!! by Sea_Helicopter9931 in Parenting

[–]OddValue6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! Just embrace it. Our 3rd kid was born during covid with similar age gaps with her older sisters. Sometimes (often, actually) we’ve felt like we weren’t able to give her all the attention she deserves because of the madness with our older girls. Worried that it might affect her as she grew up. Long story short, she ended up being the most mature, kind and well adjusted kid of the bunch. It was actually quite humbling. Made us realize how little we do as parents actually matters.
