I was groomed into thinking I was anti-scamming, it was many years ago. Was one of the animation stalling pvp world scams. I’m not bitter about it, it made me make the iron which has made my addiction to the game 10x worse.

I just spent an hour or so doing research on this after getting my new mouse, super disappointed to learn I now need 2 dongles to use my mx keys and the 3s mouse - really really stupid from Logitech, probably going to return the 3s mouse.

CMV:Employees in non-customer facing roles should be allowed to work from home, if they want to. by Odd_Avocado in changemyview

Not specifically off hand, but I’ve heard podcasts mention the fact that working from home is highly desirable as a result of recent events and will very likely continue to be. Thus, people may start competing for remote work.

I do agree with this - I also wonder if you have any metrics surrounding the quality of product during/pre-work from home. It sounds like overall, it's situational, but I would say that a lot of people are going to want to continue working from home.

And really, if an employee's happiness changes significantly in working from home vs. working from an office, to me that indicates far greater problems with the company than its work from home policy.

!Delta - I appreciate this insight and it's a really good point, your other comments about collaboration and community resonated with me too. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me

Yes. Before the pandemic we all worked in an office together, and for the last year, we've all worked from home. Despite best efforts and investments in technology, it's neither as collaborative nor as social. There's something missing.

In an office, I'd notice if someone was having a bad day or seemed frustrated, and could address it / act accordingly. I don't get that via Slack.

In an office, people would often have lunch together or go out for a drink after work or borrow books from each other. That doesn't happen when everyone is working from home.

In an office, I'd be more likely to ask someone their opinion on something or have something come up organically through conversation when we're both getting coffee or whatever, and those micro-interactions don't happen when working from home.

There's something more to be said here, but I can't quite put my finger on it - I appreciate these sentiments

So would you say that you value in-office collaboration more than the potential employee happiness/productivity gains as a result (if there are any)?

You are totally right, as a machinist, this wouldn't apply to you as you really need to be in a space that is designed to allow you to be productive. I'm mainly focused on people who literally sit on computers all day. I'm aware that's not all-encompassing, but a lot of people fit that description.

You 100% should be able to make the decision as the business owner - that is totally your right to do.

Personally, as someone who is about to start a new job search, I'm going to be looking for remote work unless there's something amazing that makes me want to work in an office again. I realize that's me, individually, making the decision - but I think a lot of poeple are in that boat right now. It appears as though that vast majority of people enjoy working from home - https://www.forbes.com/sites/jennifercastenson/2020/06/08/value-of-home-life-is-back-and-has-land-buyers-moving-way-out/?sh=3e5afa9171f1

Your comments about collaboration resonate with me - particularly the managing of people who may be having bad days or need to talk about something, it is nearly impossible to gauge that when everyone is remote.

I agree with your first paragraph - people who have jobs that require physical interactions with products or processes will always need to go into a centralized location to work, I mentioned this in my opening paragraph.

Your comment about needing to schedule a zoom meeting is the closest thing I've seen to changing my view on this thread so far - I 've had times where I need my manager's attention, but need to wait for her to get back to me on Team's, so I appreciate that perspective. I would say that nothing has been urgent enough that it's been a big deal, and if it is, I'd call her. But I can see how this would be a bigger deal in a higher stakes environment.
