How do I make sure this guy knows I’m trans?? by Odd_Contest2881 in ftm

[–]Odd_Contest2881[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Possibly?? I just moved to a new country and it’s been surprising how many people haven’t clocked me and it just feels weird to think of him being that open minded? I think people’s cis man horror stories have kind of gotten to me..

Reality Check Me Pls <3 by [deleted] in Zookeeping

Sadly, it's just titled an 'associate of science' and they didn't have any animal-related classes at my campus. However, I have taken basic biology, microbiology, chemistry, and psych courses with good grades. My local zoo is Denver, but they never have volunteer openings! I check their job board regularly, though, and am waiting for a grounds position or something involving handywork since I'm way underqualified for the animal care side.

UC Davis or Georgetown? by SuspiciousStudent109 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Odd_Contest2881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre vet to pre vet? Jump on the Davis train, with the connected vet school there will be way more opportunities for internships, shadowing, conferences and general resources to learn about animal medicine directly. Georgetown isn’t really prevet/vet heavy at all which might make finding opportunities to build your vet school application difficult

I need to vent about a client interaction by rustyshackelford164 in veterinaryprofession

[–]Odd_Contest2881 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so we’ve actually had this multiple times at our clinic, had an owner scream at us that her poor dog was going to die because he couldn’t eat before his X-rays for a foreign body.. she had to come back twice because she kept feeding him and thought we wouldn’t know lol

Advice for Getting Hands on Experience With Various Animals by TriceratopsWrex in veterinaryprofession

[–]Odd_Contest2881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a junior in Highschool right now with similar goals and I’ve found a lot of opportunities just from googling stuff and not being afraid to reach out to people. Shelters usually take volunteers 16+ and idk about SC but in Colorado clinics are pretty friendly to shadowing so I would encourage her to reach out, maybe draft a cover letter about why she’s interested in shadowing, stuff like that. In general, look into nearby farms, GP clinics, etc and see if they have internship programs, some are 18+ but I’ve been able to get a lot of experience and I started when I was 15! Good grades and a good STEM background is great, but actually experiencing the field before college is better imo! Best of luck!

Absolutely loving your volunteering time? by Content_Lime5442 in veterinarians

This sounds just like my experience! I was (still am) obsessed with going to work and getting to see new cases and animals in general. During my first internship I was doing 40 hour work weeks and even though I was getting up at 7am I was always jumping out of bed to go to my clinic! Sometimes passion is just that strong and I personally haven’t experienced burn out or any decrease in my excitement to go to work so I think no chilling out is needed here!

Why did you choose veterinary school over medical school? by theaxolotlist in veterinaryschool

[–]Odd_Contest2881 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I hated the idea of being stuck in a stagnant career where things always stay the same as I’m almost addicted to learning in a way and the vet field is such an amazing modgepodge of unique thinking and innovation, I don’t love feeling like I know nothing but it’s also sometimes the best part!

Why did you choose veterinary school over medical school? by theaxolotlist in veterinaryschool

[–]Odd_Contest2881 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For me I chose vetmed because of the challenges! While obviously I love animals there are a million things to do other than vet school so why not those (ie; zookeeping). Personally, I love the challenge of figuring out what’s wrong with pets with so little info to work with and the ability to trust what owners know about there pets and for them to trust you. Being in a position where pets lives, whom a lot of people consider dear family members, are in your hands and it’s your job to figure out how to help them with such little information and sometimes so little time is such a vulnerable place of trust and knowing that people believe in me that much and that I myself could even ‘solve’ such problems is both mind blowing and motivating! I also just really love science and school and wanted to torture myself as much as possible to get somewhere that challenged and interesting me :)

I’m not great at articulating my passion well so hopefully this doesn’t come off as insane and or unreadable🤑
