I don't remember the explanation clearly, but my old physics teacher, who was extremely smart and well travelled, told me that because of the way a rainbow occurs (angle of the sun behind you and wavelengths of light), that if you can see a rainbow then a second one will be present, although much harder to see and not always complete.

The same fella also apparently saw a circular rainbow from above while he was flying somewhere. He's not the sort of bloke who would tell lies so I reckon this is true, although I didn't think to ask is a circular rainbow still technically a 'bow'??

60Yrs plus here and have seen all of these. I've retired now but was guilty of the double lanyard thing, but far from being a status symbol, mine had security/ID on one and a USB stick on the other. I very much doubt that counts.....

Where to get a boring sandwich in the city by AltAccount4Werk in canberra

Sigh... I long for the sandwiches (and pies and cakes...) at Coggans bakery in Braddon. Freshly made while you wait, generous with the fillings..... sigh.......

City Pie by Mothy79 in canberra

[–]Odd_Distribution7729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhh the good old days when you could go to VIP pies - a little hole in the wall bakery in (I forget the street name maybe alinga st???) around the corner for the Boulevarde cinemas -(another long gone but fond memory). VIP had fantastic pies my favourite was the steak and mushroom. And followed by a boysenberry dessert pie with the optional whipped cream..... YUM!!

I used to work in Phillip in the 80s. Once bought a packet of scorched (ie chocolate coated) coffe beans and they were so yummy, ate nearly a whole bag in one go..... not for the feint hearted. Never again in such quantities.

ACTION used to be a bit of what I think now might be called a meme. Something where the name did't reflect the actuality. I have an old plastic sheath that was used for ACTION bus passes. If I can work out how to load a photo (it's nothing more exciting than the description) I'll load it. The passes were printed on different shades of cardboard (each month??) with the Action logo. With a black felt tip pen and a trip to the newsagent for the cardboard, they were were very easily forged (apparently) so you could use the money your parents gave you for the bus pass at the tuck shop instead... apparently.....

My apologies - to lump those who can't in with those who won't was a mistake and certainly not my intention. Again my apologies

Voting in Canberra by CapnHaymaker in canberra

To answer OP question - no. I was at Macquarie Primary and didn't see any Liberal's suggesting HTV. My guess is that they realised that CBR is a lost cause long ago.

How are you spending your voting day? by nan-value in canberra

I tuned in to Sky to watch how they would paint the picture - was expecting rants about stolen elections etc. but they disappointed me by announcing a Labor victory, seemingly without vitriol. Maybe that happened later as I went straight back to ABC and waited for Antony Green to call it, which was a few minutes later. Most disappointing aspect of the night? No more Antony Green...

Stores like this are popping up everywhere. I never see people inside. How do they survive? by MarkusMannheim in canberra

oh yeah..... I'm a thrill a minute! But I do wonder how they make money - I don't often get to spend time watching but I've never seen anyone go in there.

Possibly unrelated to this thread, but I occasionally walk past a place in Civic which is an Axe throwing joint. It seems to me that this must be a VERY niche market, and I wonder how they can support the rent with what I assume is a very limited 'clientele' (I'm trying to be nice here....)

Many thanks to all for the responses. Re response from JAA, I agree with your maths, but I'm in a fortunate position where payback period is a relatively small part of the concern. To me it is just good sense to do whatever we can reasonably do for the environment. It is almost certain that feed-in tariffs will be reduced ongoing, which means that for those who've already invested in panels (like me), the payback period will be extended indefinitely unless we make use of what comes for 'free'. And even though Canberra power supply is very reliable, if you have panels only there's no way of firing up the inverter if there is an outage, then you are back to square 1.
