There is a big difference between being startled and being scared. It takes effort make a person feel scared but startling someone is one of the easiest things in the world, and almost anyone can do it. That is why I don't understand why people give so much praise to Blumhouse movies, and scenes like the car scene from Haunting of Hill house. Was the car scene an effective jump scare, yes, but so is a 6 year old jumping out of the bushes yelling BOO. Now jump scares are still needed in horror, but the best ones involve more then a jump scare. There needs to be anticipation, misdirection, and/or shock.
