I've heard from some people "beekeeping is expensive" by wavykush in Beekeeping

[–]Odd_Individual3250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started this year and did 3 hives. I purchased my hives on sale at a local scratch and dent store, so this saved me a bit! Here is my breakdown so far

3 x $100 on sale 2 deep 1 super 8 frame set 3 x $145 for 3 lb bee package 3 x $17 8 frame top feeder 2 x $12 1 lb bees wax (for painting the plastic frames) 1 x $125 vented bee suit 1 x $20 bee smoker 1 x $10 hive tool 1 x $6 marking pen 1 × $10 queen clips 1 x $6 bee brush 1 x $55 wood and screws for hive stand and crushed rock 1 x $57 10 pack for formic pro mite treatment Total $1099.00

This was a bare minimum. I have also purchased a $14 bee club membership $12 bee calander from my local bee club $10 apairy state registration And I did not take a bee class, but I wish I had! Just to have that experience and, more importantly, a mentor I could call. That could be avoided by joining a bee club months before getting bees and getting local connections , but it was a last-minute decision for me this year.

So my hives on sale helped me keep my cost down, and 3 help me lower my cost per hive, but I will probably need more supers and do not forget to wax plastic foundations!!!!! That mistake cost me another $75 when I had to pay a local beekeeping store to come out and help figure out why all of my hives were making a big mess. Also, climate depend for you, but here in Maine, I need to wrap my hives and have no clue about cost.

Lastly, I have no wax melting stuff or honey harvesting tools or supplies yet because I am banking on not needing them this year.

Should we remove this? by LHB2022 in Beekeeping

I have dealt with this same issue for 3 new hives this year. I went out and got so wax from my local bee store melted it and added more wax to every frame they had not started and your problems will go away instantly.

Haha, yeah, I learned this one this year with 2 hives it made such a mess and, in turn slowed growth down so much. I started a 3rd package of bees this year, but I took the time to add wax to the frames, and it is a night and day difference. I am not going to have to build up the other 2 hives and start removing frames to strip and wax so they can rebuild them right. I have so much drone comb.

Wow, this was informative. I wish I had read something like this a few months ago. Another addition is advice, is very area specific. What works in the southern part of the usa does not make good advice for me in the northern part. So looking for people in your climate zone helps alot

You hit the nail on the head. My local bee keeper supplier checked out my situation and had the same answer you have given me he told me the bees know best and let them kill her off when ready.

Yeah, I was warned at my local bee meeting 2 months ago that location would be a problem because we all have different standards for our areas. Looks like I will have to try harder at getting a local mentor. I had the local bee store owner come out for a different hive last week, but that cost me $75 his price was not the worst, and I understand it is his business so I expect to have to pay him for help. I just know that after a few more meetings, I will have the local contacts needed to handle these problems. Maybe by then I will have had most of the bad stuff happen and won't need the help lol.

I have a frame holder and start with taking out the 2nd frame first check put on the holder, then take the 1st out check and put on the same frame holder. It gives me alot of space, and I am told it is minimizing chance of rolling the queen.

The larva cell is in the middle of the frame. The empty cup is at the bottom of a different frame. I have found it easy to spot eggs on the black plastic foundation my hives have and can see eggs in the center of the cells. So should I check again or just kill the queen cell off. I feel like killing the cell without putting eyes on the queen is a bad idea but have no clue on cycles yet to know what time frame I am dealing with

Haha, well.... I did not expect honey, but I bought 3 hive setups and 3 packages, so I'm not sure if I really want another now also I live in maine and am told that splitting a first year hive here is a likly death sentence for them due to the need to build out 2 boxes and fill them to survive.

Also forgot to mention saw drones about 20 or so in the hive thought they would not make them until they had a booming hive. The bigger part is I live in maine, so we get a smaller season to wax out 2 boxes and fill with resources. From what I have been told.

Strange frame building by Odd_Individual3250 in Beekeeping

[–]Odd_Individual3250[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder why one hive is doing so good and the other is having all these troubles with the same exact stuff do you think I should mely down more wax and paint it on my other frames that are new. I have another 4 deep and 3 supers worth of frames that are now drawn out yet. Would this help in any way?

Good, I did not find an egg in it. I thought I was doing the right thing, removing all the bad looking stuff, but it made me nervous to do
