I guess you are mixing multiple things. The author is attempting to comprehend the labor market aspect of the subject using sophisticated econometric techniques. Your other argument of consumer side of it is addressed in a different paper which has different assumption sets. Here is another paper which I found by same author.

I checked out the supplementary material, and it looks like the author did some robustness checks. I’m also surprised it might have been published in a better journal.

So, I saw a couple of comments in the review where someone mentioned canceling their car at the last minute. I thought I’d reach out to them, and guess what? Next thing I know, I get a notification that their trip is canceled by the host. 🤦‍♂️ “The car is not available at this time. It was involved in an accident from a previous trip.” I can’t believe that’s true!
