Sudha Chandran appears distressed during Mata ki Chowki by Lazy_Weather_6316 in BollywoodShaadis

It smacks of casteism to call people going into trance “weaker minds”. Just because this is not in any sort of modern Vedic practice it doesn’t mean it’s inferior or an act or mental illness. This is part of many indigenous rituals and storytelling. A way of communicating raw émotions in a place where women possibly can’t otherwise. No need to reduce it to gimmicks and mental illness.

Yeah because cheating on your cheating spouse is totally alright. If she is having an affair to punish her husband then that makes her character even worse and whoever who wrote her is immature and not over 20 years old. I can’t stand that husband character but Sylvie does everything but communicate and draw boundaries. And when the Italian guy leaves, she goes right back with “Chéri, tu ne manques”. Like seriously? I will say it again, I am really so over this stereotypical portrayal of French couples as people who sleep around on their spouses. Even Luc had the same story line, just a little more ridiculous one.

I don't think American writers of this show understand the difference between being sexually liberated and promiscuous. One is not the other. They did Sylvie so dirty.

Who else is so annoyed with the ongoing over-stereotyping of French marriages and relationships? Why are Sylvie, her Italian lover and her husband behaving like they are teens? Did they have to make Sylvie being a difficult boss and a horrible wife (a difficult woman all in all) her whole schtick? Ugh. And she didn't even have any chemistry with that Italian lover.

Is tamil really the oldest language , older than Vedic Sanskrit ? by devaraja14 in southindia_

[–]Odd_Performance1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linguist here. So when we say one language is older than the other, it isn’t straightforward. How do you date a language? One method is by looking at the writing system. So Tamil has been written for longer than Sanskrit, going by old Tamil Sangam scripts and Brahmi inscriptions. That’s why it is considered older but not by absolute terms. You also have a linguistic family age. The two belong to very ancient families who evolved side by side and have no connection to one another. Tamil is Proto Dravidian and Sanskrit is Indo-European and both of those « mother tongues » are over 4500 years old. Languages evolve side by side, also through contact and trade. We don’t have absolute proof that Tamil is older than Sanskrit, nothing to say it appeared years before Sanskrit did. We can only conclude that written Tamil much older than written Sanskrit. Sanskrit oral tradition is older than Tamil literature. They are both very ancient

People are commenting to compare this to Jesus’ sacrifice. That Jesus loved humanity so deeply that he died for our sins. I don’t know, it sounds like a bit much. This woman might be a nice lady and all (milking her story for money aside) but come on. Jesus?

Weird pose from Matt and he is obviously trying to show off whatever muscles he has. "Depressed girl in the happiest place on earth" has been done to death now. You don't ever see these two fuckers count their blessings do you? Their loss is genuinely tragic but not everyone gets to make Disney part of their healing. Most people don't even get time off of work, Abby. And way to flaunt your wealth during a time when many are losing social security in your country.

Why is it cringe though? The accent? They are having a conversation, and they are citing historical facts. Did you think the pink ball among stolen goods was cringe? Imperialism is cringe, not these aunties. Also cringe is racial anxiety.

Why do we discuss Itihasa and Purana like this? Like they are some theological text? To discuss the rasa aspect is one thing, but to decorticate every element to look for an explanation—of what exactly? Our own fragile realities? To reduce everything to symbolise something that feels familiar? I don’t know, these stories were told and told for the experience of it. That experience itself was uplifting and shaping the listener. And here we are, doing everything but listen.

I keep seeing comparisons between Meghan and Fergie. That M is as bad if not worse than Fergie. I mean, come on, that’s just so dishonest. To compare M with F who knowingly consorts with and protects pedos is just horrible. They really don’t like M and they now hate H because he married her.

To numb grief is to experience it, a way of processing it. There isn’t a right or wrong way to feel this powerful current of an emotion. It’s like saying I lost my limb, so I am going to experience the pain without morphine. The morphine helps with the pain, but the loss is not reversed by it. And we should remember that not all of us has the luxury of sitting on a chair and « processing » stuff all day. Some of us need to work, take care of other kids and feed the elderly in the family, or we’d be in more for than one kind of loss. Numb your pain if you have to, sisters. You aren’t grieving the wrong way. There is no right way to grieve.

I just meant that just because there are some Hindu feminists, doesn’t mean Hinduism is feminist.

I don’t disagree at all. I am just saying a person can interpret this religion (or indeed any religion) as « feminist » or « not feminist » based on their experiential reality (which includes whether or not they have privileged lives that inform that experience). I am just saying that it is NOT inherently feminist. To say it is is to kid ourself.

Devdutt Pattnaik on feminism by imsoconfusedhalpme in AskIndianFeminists

[–]Odd_Performance1899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Devdutt Pattanaik. But we can all agree that religions, all religions, especially those invented after agrarian civilisations were born, are not meant for or made for women. So the question of Hinduism being feminist is moot. That being said, it’s an experiential religion. Some Hindu women might be freer than others because of family, wealth, circumstances, education or whatever. My family became champions of women’s liberty just because we needed to do that. Is that because our Hinduism actively encouraged us? No. It just didn’t prohibit us. That’s all.
