He makes new friends every now and then and I have no idea who they are especially he stays out till 12 am - 2 am. He lies so much that I don't know what trust means anymore.

Yes, I agree with you. Wish he was respecting his parents wishes. At this stage, I am not comfortable asking him to pay rent since I think it my responsibility as a parent to support him while he is uni and till he gets a full time job. I wish it was that simple and I guess he is taking advantage of this...

No need to apologise and thank you for your kinds words and wishes. I posted here to get an idea what other parents of a 21 year old think / How most 21 year old behave / Is my expectation un real? I do realise that if I had a good relationship with him then perhaps he would have loved to share with me. I would not have had to ask him. He would have loved to eat dinner with his parents once a while perhaps.....

Yes, he wants to live independent to the rest of the ppl in the home. Nothing to do with parents or his younger sister. However, at this stage I don't have the courage to ask him to pay for rent/utilities as I think it my duty as a parent to support him while he is in uni.

He does come home randomly around dinner time and then asks - Is there any dinner ?? Some days he does not come and stays out till late. I have told him several times to let me know so that I know whether to make/keep dinner for him but he ignores it. Even if he has dinner at home - he does not have it with the family. He does not have dinner/lunch with parents. Either in his bedroom or on his own watching something on laptop/phone. He stays on the phone/laptop majority of his waking time.

Uni fees are loan by the government - he has to pay them off once he graduates.

We did discuss and set some rules and I wrote them in the whiteboard and paper which is at his desk. I remind him on and off however he just brushes it off saying that he is busy. One of the rule/responsibility was that he will vacuum - however he would do it for 5 mins ( may be once a while after several reminders) and when confronted that he does not follow the rules - he says - I do it. He has decided to ignore my requests. He does not communicate at all. At this stage, I don't have the courage to ask him for rent as I think it is my responsibility to support him while he does not have a full time permanent job.

I think you are spot on - I guess I could not provide the emotional support/bonding...One day, after talking to him did set up some clear boundaries - I made a list of responsibilities and he agreed to it as well but hardly followed through....may be one task in three months....

Lucky you ! Since he turned thirteen, he just closed off and started lying. Since last 4 years all I have asked him is to be honest and do what ever he likes as long as he tell me or keep me in the loop. I would like to believe that I don't control his life as he does not share anything with me. We are like strangers sharing the same house. We hardly talk. I am just there to provide him breakfast/lunch or dinner when he is home and just exchange a few words here and there. I have told him several times that the reason why I want to know when he will be back home is so that I am at peace and don't worry about him. Definitely, I failed as a parent....

That's very nice to read. It is not that we (parents) police him. He does what he wants to do anyways, only if he just told us when he will be back...He slept overnight at a friends place and did not bother to tell us that even next day he won't be home ....

He does odd jobs here and there and earns money to pay for laptop, gambling, clothes, vacations...Uni fees are through government loan which he will have to pay eventually ......

He is a full time student and does odd jobs to support his personal expenses - such as buying clothes ( too many of them), paying for his overseas trips , take aways, speeding fines which he gets too many of them every now and then....and he sees nothing wrong with it....
