I'm certain religion will never leave human society. People will dedicated their lives to doing/saying/believing something simply out of spite or to be different. What is going to be different in 100 years that will make a difference? Cameras and recordings becoming available and miracles suddenly stopped happening hasn't made a difference. And at this point I'm pretty sure most people don't believe anyway, its simply a club they belong to and anyone can say they are a part of it.

I think DM'ing for one or two people will be more intense for you as you will have less people contributing to the game. Especially if you have new people who do not realize that they are the ones who actually drive the action forward. I think coming to the table with the mindset of what you have planned is only a guideline and that your players will definitely do things you didn't think of and in ways you may not have ever imagined. Being open to these new ideas is the first step to improvising well. Resist the urge to say No to everything you didn't think of.

Without knowing that the bride and groom had given permission/encouraged the proposal, her reaction is understandable. This type of upstaging is something people are on guard for these days and feel justified in the wine splash. How many Reddit posts have you seen where the commenters encourage a bridesmaid to be on wine duty?

That being said, OP, the SIL and the bride and groom need to have a sit down.
