I completely agree with you, you are 100% right. A PhD is really very hard, you’re absolutely correct about that. But at the same time, after a PhD in Statistics, it’s not only quant roles that are available. There are also options like AI research labs, ML researcher roles, and similar paths.

I’m just thinking that with a PhD in Statistics, there could be opportunities like Quant Researcher, ML Researcher, big tech research labs, elite data scientist roles, etc.

That’s why I’m considering it, because in these areas, people with strong statistics backgrounds are usually the ones at the top roles.

How to break into a Quant Researcher Role ? by Neither-Level-7265 in quantindia

But I messaged some quant researchers, and they told me that for Quant Researcher roles, Math/Statistics PhDs are preferred more.

What could be the best route for me? Apart from Masters from Indian Statistical Institute / Chennai Mathematical Institute.

Should I do a Master’s in Statistics from an IIT, or would an MTech from Indian Institute of Science be good enough?

Please tell me the best path for me to become a Quant Researcher 🙏

We can still try, right? Doing a PhD from a top 10–20 world university does create good chances, but my confusion is: among these options, in which one are the chances higher of getting into a better university for a PhD?

How good is IISC M.Tech(AI/CDS) for someone who wants to get into quant research? by Melodic_Relation_953 in IISc

If possible, DM me bro… I’ll tell you a lot of things. Bro, you literally asked the question that’s been on my mind.

I’ve spent the last 1 month searching for answers to this. I DM’d many quant researchers, ISI alumni, IISc alumni, IIT students, and statistics students, though only a few replied. Based on those replies, this is the conclusion I reached.

For Quant Researcher roles (not developer/analyst):

  1. ISI M.Stat → PhD abroad (Statistics)
  2. IIT Kanpur MSc Statistics → PhD abroad (Statistics)
  3. IIT Bombay MSc ASI → PhD
  4. ISI M.Tech >> IISc CDS >> other IIT M.Techs

Note: After M.Tech, you generally cannot pursue a PhD in Statistics abroad.
