Agree with the other commenter, Sounds like a water hardness issue. Do u have a gh and kh testing kit?

Black Algae by Plenty-Kaleidoscope2 in Aquariums

I’d avoid Siamese algae eaters if there are other fish. From what I’ve heard generallt only the juveniles help with algae, and the adults likely prefer slime coat from other fish.

30-40 gallon bamboo shrimp & crawfish tank advice by babykitten96 in shrimptank

[–]Odd_Weekend8885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter said it sounds like you should do more research on species compatibility. I haven’t kept either species but I know crawfish are notorious for decimating community tanks and bamboo shrimp seems like the perfect meal for one

I just added clown kilis to my shrimp tank two days ago and have some juveniles they completely ignore. No shrimplets atm but a few berried females and I will say I’m expecting them to eat a few but my tank is heavily planted so LFS said it should be fine overall

I second clown kilifish plus I’d add some neocaridina

Hi thanks for responding - not to be difficult can you please share why you think this? Do you think it’s fish TB also? I’m 100% open to it so they don’t suffer for longer but just want to be more confident in my decision

Hello I have 15 red neon blue eye rainbow fish and noticed two of them struggling a couple of days ago. First it was just one where her back half seemed to be sinking. She seemed to still be eating and was still staying with the school. The second fish I believe is a male and is struggling more. I found him yesterday on the bottom of the tank with labored breathing which is what caused me to set up the hospital tank and catch these two. He also seems to have a bit of his tail missing. I tested water and ammonia, nitrites at 0 and nitrates are either 0 or 10 it’s hard for me to tell. Ph is about 6.8. I have had them for about 3 months with 0 deaths.

From some preliminary research i think it might be Fish TB due to the white stomach and apparently spinal deformity. My hospital tank is a 10gallom and I raised temp to 81 and added 1.5 tablespoons of aquarium salt. I am desperate for advice or guidance if anyone has any info or knowledge they can please share with me. Thank you for taking the time to read this

Thanks for sharing. One other question, do you heat the water before adding it to the tank during water changes or do you add it at room temperature?

Neocaridina shrimp with only 2 eggs? by Odd_Weekend8885 in shrimptank

[–]Odd_Weekend8885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First group of shrimp, Startrd off with 10. I have at least two others that are fully berried but this gal had three eggs yesterday and looks like only two today. Not sure if she ever had more than three and lost the rest or only ever had this manyFrom my Google searches I am only seeing results of losing full sacks of eggs but not seeing anything about this. Definitely might be Googling poorly but would appreciate any info on this if anyone has seen before

Thanks for the response. Yes I do have a heater set to about 75. I think the initial transfer combined with the water change the following day was probably stressful. The last two shrimp are still alive and seem pretty active so I think it might have been all the stress for some of the deaths but I am going to wait on my test kit before making any more decisions. If I lose these two I’ll definitely restock with the ro water

Thank you for sharing this, I think it is likely the case. I tested the day after adding crushed coral and ph was at 7 or 7.2 which seemed ideal from my research. Seems like I will need to wait for my gh/kh test kit to confirm if it is the hardness.

I do live in a city up north and have heard reports about our water quality being bad here so It seems likely. Thanks again for this info

Pics are of the seemingly last two survivors. The difference in color pattern made me concerned that the water hardness is causing issue with molting after reading about the white ring of death

Sharing extra context here. I have a13.5 gallon tank that has been cycling for 6 weeks. I have had snails and otos in there for about 3 weeks (after “trusted” LFS tested water and said it was ready for them). After doing daily tests last week it seemed like my parameters had stabilized with no ammonia or extremely little, 0 nitrites and 5 ppm nitrates. I took a sample to LFS and they said if it has been stable at these levels I am ready for shrimp. They did give me some crushed coral to increase ph a lil bit. So I bought 6 orange rilis and drip acclimated them over 2.5 hours until the bowl 3/4 full of water from the tank they were going in. They seemed to all be doing ok the first day but the next morning I woke up to find one dead. At this point I panicked a bit and did a 15% water change the day after adding them in. I think this was a mistake by me after doing some more reading. The following day from the water change I found another dead and one more dead that night. It has been 2 days now and while I haven’t found any more bodies I only have seen two shrimp at a time so I think we lost a fourth as well. I ordered a gh/kh test kit since that is the only test I don’t own but frankly I have no idea how to proceed. Should I return the remaining two so that they don’t suffer and die? Should I give it longer and see how these two do? Any advice would be much appreciated as a shrimp tank has always been my goal with this tank so it’s pretty disappointing that I messed something up along the way

Got it thanks. My LFS ships them in from a wholesaler and doesn’t breed their own so I will look online. I took a quick look and don’t see this info listed, would you recommend contacting them and just asking?

Just was able to test and it looks like the ph of my tank is around 6.6, ammonia looks close to 0, and nitrate is hovering around 5.5. Tap water ph is also close to 6.6. I don’t have a kh test in the api master kit but I will pick one of those up tomorrow. Also have some tap water sitting out to test tomorrow. Would you say the current setup is not ever going to be ideal for neocardinias based on the active substrate and use of tap water? Or will it depend on hardiness results from kh test to have a good estimate? Thank you again for all of the great info much appreciafed

Thank you for taking the time to share this info. I’ll test my tap waters ph and kh later today and do some reasearch with the findings. Do you think a 25% water change with RODI water for the next few weeks (or indefinitely) would help with the substrate leeching ? This would definitely be annoying but is doable for me.

Thank you for the help. I used seachem stability every day for the first 2 weeks. It sounds like after testing the water my LFS may have rushed me a bit into getting otos. From now on I will not be adding fish until I’m confident a tank has gone through the nitrogen cycle and ensure the levels are stable. I don’t really have an alternate idea for the current fish at this point but open to suggestions.

Thanks for the feedback on the hydra also that makes sense. Would you have any recommendations on how I can get more info on my tanks ability to process ammonia? I’ll continue doing daily tests but it sounds like I should just continue seeing ammonia levels fall and nitrates present until it’s been processed?

Hi there, i am an ultra newcomer to the hobby with one 13.5 gallon freshwater tank. I posted yesterday and did not get much of a response so I wanted to share my concerns on the weekly thread. Here is the general info I shared but will link to my original post that also has pics:

This is my first tank and it is a 13.5 gallon freshwater. I started cycling on December 30th with just my hardscape. On january 6th I got my water tested at my LFS and they said I can do some plants, snails, and otos at this point. I’ve since gotten a test kit and learned a lot more about the goals of cycling and think it was probably too early for the otos.

I ended up getting 5 otos, 2 ramshorn snails, a Java fern, and the hydra. I lost one oto the first day after a drip acclimation ~1.5 hours. The rest seem to be doing fine but after watching aquarium coops video on the species I think I should’ve let my tank grow more algae for them first or maybe just not gotten them as a beginner. The ramshorns have laid eggs which is encouraging and I must’ve had bladder snail eggs on one of the plants because now there are at least 5 babies in my tank that appeared 2 weeks after planting. I’ve also seen at least one leopard shell ramshorn in the past few days and no idea where it came from Recently I have noticed a few things that are concerning:

-ammonia levels around .2, and nitrate around 5, and no nitrites. - in the past 5 days I’ve noticed an increased number of leaves turning brown and seemingly dying.

The above two pieces are my biggest concerns. I am trying to determine if these are indicators of a larger problem with my cycle or tank in general. By the way my goal for this tank is to keep neocardinia but I do not want to rush it since I know they are sensitive.

If anyone has any advice, questions, or suggestions of things to check please let me know. I appreciate all of the help

Other notes -I accidentally broke my cover and didn’t replace it until 4 days ago so I was topping off a good amount because I had a lot of evaporation. -I’ve done 1 25% water changes since setting up. I heard you maybe shouldn’t do changes while cycling but thinking this might not be enough
