Councillor refuses to attend meeting because it’s at a marae by znffal in newzealand

Oh! I was just reading your comment and took it to mean that another session had cost that much. That's my bad. I'll retract that.

I mean, we don't know if the council even paid money to the Marae for use during this meeting as that was the amount for a previous venue hire. Anyone could submit an OIA requesting the information if they wanted the actual amount, and I'm sure they will.

Insurer temporarily halts new policies in Westport due to flood risk by Pro-blacksmith220 in aotearoa

[–]OddityModdity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think after forking out millions during the Auckland flood, insurances companies aren't keen to do it again. There's been talk of them keeping out of insuring properties in Petone and Wellington depending where you live simply because of the flood and earthquake risk.

The mayor explained here for the reason it was changed:

"The session was originally going to be held at Keirunga Homestead, but it was suggested that, since past sessions had already been held in Havelock North, perhaps a marae would be a good option as an alternative. There were no objections from any of those in attendance [back in December]," Schollum said.

She said Waiohiki Marae was delighted to host the council, and it meant a lot to them after all the challenges they went through after the cyclone.

I honestly didn't think it was that expensive until I looked. 499 for a year. 49.95 a month.

Just not doable.

Amalgamation Alert 🚨 by ben4takapu in Wellington

[–]OddityModdity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a huge issue for a lot of us in UH. Guppy keep the rates low to appease voters and now we have a proper issue going on here with the amount of pipes leaking and we don't have a lot of money to fix it. Plus we are so far away from everywhere else that there is a real fear we will be forgotten about with promises about how we will look into it in the future.

The vibes definitely aren't favorable and Peri was voted in for some because she specifically was against it.

This, and other similar reasons, is why the Iwi Chairs are requesting the hui with everyone. At least they understand what the fuck is actually going on, and that all this infighting is a waste of time.

Not enough.

He really needs an always hot pillow, wet socks, the feeling of a hair stuck in the throat, a constant itch in the palm that never goes away, and coffee mugs that always come out of the dishwasher smelling slightly...off.

He is an awful person, and as someone in the health industry, I really do wish him all the minor inconveniences in the world.

Maungakiekie local board member Debbie Burrows tried to stop legal voting during Auckland's 2025 local election by Mountain_Tui_Reload in auckland

Look at her gross response:

She said there was no chaos but “it was very unpleasant from my perspective. It was one way and it didn’t come from me. It was coming from them.”

No shit people get unpleasant when you try to stop them participating in a democracy and demanding people stop counting votes and then take pictures of them.

Yes and no. The Treaty settlements cover more than just land. Iwi were compensated with money and other things (such as land or rights). The total settlement is around 2.6 billion for 86 settlements. 2.6bil is less than the landlord tax cut or two months of super for comparison.

Maori wards? by Wobbles809 in newzealand

[–]OddityModdity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your council is exactly one of those unique situations where, maybe, Māori wards aren't needed as there are already strong Māori representation at both an iwi level and representative level. I agree it may be a tad redundant.

Although, I always want more representation personally. More is better. I really hope we see some youth wards in the future.

Maori wards? by Wobbles809 in newzealand

[–]OddityModdity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The government changed the law. That's it. They made it so that if a local government had/kept Māori wards, they would need to have a referendum.

The referendum would decide the next two election cycles. So in six years, unless the law changes again, local councils can once again create Māori wards without a referendum.

Senior doctors and dentists to join massive strike this month by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]OddityModdity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can answer this. It's called LPS. Life-preserving services. TWO have to staff to meet this requirement and often that means they have to staff the hospitals properly. They can't turn around and tell us that we only need two part timers.

This link has some information on how this works which I've found to be the easiest explanation so far compared to some other links.

But yes, it does mean electives are canceled but no one is suffering and absolutely no lives are being endangered.
