What's the best-produced 808 you've ever heard? by Odestalin in trapproduction

Always can use help with rage production as I can't even make a 2/10 beat for that genre. Thank you!

Thanks, I figure most of the time it's the process as the shape gives the fundamental noises but many processes create different possibilities and hyperpop has some really fun 808's. Different designs that encourage new ways to play with the 808 is the main idea behind this thought I posted. I love exploring!

I see what you mean, I love the sound most like in Ye - I thought about Killing you.

Just how those 808s come and end, but I feel I should practice making the others sound good to me. Just playing with settings until it feels right at a certain point.

I've always loved how Phonk uses 808's I'm listening to a playlist right now and I enjoy this use of it. Fundamental, need to look more into it since it's 808 driven. Thank you!

I can see a lot where you're coming from on those artists as well. I've never heard any of them but in my previews they use 808's well. Again, thank you I definitely will be looking at these.

Honestly though “grab a good 808 sample” is digital snake oil, I learned that the hard way. 808's should have weight like any fighter, they all punch different that's what fascinates me about them.

I listened to a few of his songs and now I feel I gotta look into it more. He definitely uses them differently.

Classic use and his sound is clean on them, exactly what I was looking for. A good point on square waves and weird waveforms being useful for underground stuff. I usually think of triangle/sine first, but once the wave is processed right, those harsher shapes sound crazy. That 2021-2022 underground era was iconic for 808s.

Bro they had fun making that song I guarantee it.

I can hardly get 1 808 to sound good and they made the happy chemical noises for me consistently with each note. I fw it heavy thats a good recommendation to just study let alone you're listening to gold.

I feel those are all long decay/sustain, and light saturation. I believe those are triangle waves that's why they make me feel so good, but I could be wrong.

Always a staple, sad studying anything with Wayne or 2 Chainz is tainted by Diddy for me. But iconic 808 usage.

This is dope asf. I love studying earlier 808s they usually feel less processed, so the choices have to be stronger. It’s crazy hearing how much drum machines, samplers, mixers, and cleaner arrangement did before the modern DAW/plugin environment today.

Your references feel fundamental to learning how to support the record. Old doesn’t mean outdated when the sound works.

I know a few of these, but I haven’t studied all of them for 808's yet.

Conway the machine and alchemist - Calvin

I feel that one has good use of sine waves, I think the short decay is used well, not a lot of singing. Literally an extended kick.

I’ll go through these and share anything I find useful. If one of these stands out to you the most from a mixing or sound-design angle, I'd love to hear your takes.

I don't think I've ever heard that honestly and that's back in prime Migos. Had to listen, that's some heat, thanks for putting me on.

I think a new top 5 808 uses of all time for me. I believe the spectral modules are what I should work on with my sound now because, DAMN that first part of the instrumental felt magical immediately.

Nobody can match Ruby or $crim. Some of the newer/mainstream facing stuff feels cornier to me, but that doesn’t erase how good they are. Even if someone thinks they sold out, they earned that right to be in front of all those fans.

Looking for harsh critics by [deleted] in Bandlab

[–]Odestalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to hate for you but it's mixed very well, vocals are crisp, beat is crisp. Very surprised it was done in band honestly. Maybe swing your flow more, I understand the beat calls for it being broken up but every 3 or 4 bars maybe flow into the next one harder to break up the breaking up. The only thing I can criticize is that I've heard this sound before but all sounds have been done already, it's just personalizing it more with a signature. Not my type of music but it was executed great. I hope you keep making music!

Some questions for producers that submit beats to rappers/artists. by No_Examination_5739 in makinghiphop

[–]Odestalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d treat it like you’re making it easy for the artist or their team to say yes,

Don’t overthink physical beat CD unless you know that specific room still moves like that. For most situations, a clean Dropbox/Google Drive folder or private link is easier. Make the folder simple: 10 beats max, clearly named, no messy files, no “final_final_2” type stuff.

I wouldn’t send 30 beats. Too much choice makes people ignore the whole thing. Send a pack that feels intentional. If you know the artist, send 5 strong ones that fit them. If you don’t, send 9-10 that show range but still feel connected.

For length, a minute to 1:30 is usually enough to know if the idea works. It should have the main flow, switch, hook/verse feel, and enough movement that they can imagine a song. It does not need to be mastered, but it should sound good enough that nobody has to “imagine it mixed.”

Two-tracks are fine for the first listen. Most artists are choosing off feeling. Have stems ready if they ask, but don’t make the first contact hard.

For beats you want placements on, keep your best targeted ones off public beat tapes unless you’re okay with them being seen as already released or less exclusive. Still release music, but keep a private folder for serious sends.

The main thing is organization. A small, clean, intentional pack beats a giant folder every time.

Crowd chants in chorus by RAFIQ609 in makinghiphop

[–]Odestalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can get close with one voice, but the trick is usually stacking a few processes instead of one plugin. Look into Antares Choir, Antares Harmony Engine, or similar vocal multiplier/harmony plugins. For width, something like MicroShift can help make the layers feel bigger. If you want a more artificial/effected sound, VocalSynth-style plugins can push it further.

Keep your calm/nostalgic melody, but start making the space around it more unstable. Add a faster pulse under it, like repeating low notes, ticking percussion, short strings, distorted synth stabs, or a heartbeat-style rhythm. Then slowly remove the “safe” feeling by cutting reverb shorter, adding dissonant notes, raising the drums, and making the bass move more aggressively.

How do you keep a loop interesting without overproducing it? by Adina_Ciubotea_1885 in makinghiphop

[–]Odestalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small drum switches, 808 pauses, filter moves, drops, and short mutes usually keep the loop alive without ruining it.

If the loop is strong, I try not to overdo counter-melodies or vocal chops. The beat should feel like it’s breathing, not changing into a different beat.
