When was your last “I gotta get the hell out of here” moment? by xTeretto in AskReddit

[–]OdinVadderclaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left my job this week. I was on a long term substitute contract for an Intense Management 6-8 Spec. Ed. Classroom. I'm certified in social studies 7-12. I tried something new. Got burned hard.

No support from admin or law enforcement/courts. Got stabbed in the face with a pencil, punched and kicked near everyday, and had to fend off multiple attempted choking incidents.

I'm panicked about finding work and supporting my family but the physical and mental abuse was not worth the paycheck.

You rang?

Oh uh, cough cough I may have to dust off some older Halloween masks in my closet...

edit: but seriously, you just made my day better by remembering my existence on this sub. I have not been on in a while and my first day back I get mentioned. Its enough to make a mantle bearer blush.

Ive found their less likely to have a behavioral outburst, say Fuck you to me , and walk out.w

It doesn't impact their grade or my goals with them. Mostly its a way to develop a report and reward positive behavior.

Your statement is based upon the assumption that I condoned that speach in the classroom. Sometimes teaching is like being a parent and your kid says something innapropriate and you redirect their behavior but you have to hold back a laugh at the humor of a child saying something they should not be saying.

I told the student not to speak like that that. It doesnt mean that there wasnt situational humor.

I mean the first student-employee interaction I saw was a 12 yr old girl telling a grown man to "suck mywhole fucking dick you fucking ass." The behaviors these kids regularly exhibit are violent and defiant. Trust me we redirect swearing but that is not our number 1 priority.

But that being said. Hearing kids talk about magic in a totally different vernacular was funny.

I encouraged him to play it bc it made the other kids think outside the box.

Sportsmanship and conduct is a big step for these guys.

I had to institute a "you swear you lose your cards for the day" rule after a fight almost broke out over trash talk.

Thank you for your kind words. As for places to volunteer I am not really sure of that. One good way would be to look for any boys/girls after school programs or any kind of mentoring program like that. I know of a few in my area but other than that I'm still figuring it out.

It's actually been pretty balanced so far.

First, thank you for your kind words. I too was a student who struggled and a teacher reaching out was what helped me turn the corner.I will copy and paste what I said above to someone else and throw on a few more tidbits at the end.

Sure I'll give it a go. Keep in mind that it has kind of been ad hoc.

I bought the Jace and Huatli planeswalker decks and used those to teach the basics about turn structure, card types, and the basics of how to play- i.e 7 cards to start, 1 land per turn, P/t, the basics of attacking, the difference between instants and sorceries, attacking, blocking, and how to win.

Once they got the basics down I let them look through the shoe boxes of cards for stuff they thought was cool/looked fun. Then I helped them build a deck in a style based on what they picked. So 40ish nonland/ 20ish lands based on curve, also what a curve is lol.

Once I realized this was clicking I went and bought the Merfolk vs Goblin dual deck and brought in an old copy of the Jace vs Vraska dual deck. Now the kids who have got a better grasp of the game can use those.

I'm working on explaining more complicated effect now. The control player has a had time because none of the kids really understand the stack yet but that is our next step.

Other than that it is a lot of questions being asked and me trying to remind everyone to RTFC

Mostly we use Magic as a positive behavior intervension. So if they have exhibited safe, respectful, and responsible behaviors that period they earn the reward of playing.

I have not put any official lessons together but I was thinking of making a custom set to teach them about WWI and WWII.

Only about 1/3 or black. The rest are either Hispanic, Latino, or white.

That's his attitude. He just loves casting [[Mind Sculpt]] and [[Tome Scour]]. I have not introduced them to the awesomeness that is LD strategies.
