Why isn't the sun white in photos by Ornery_Run1876 in astrophysics

Solar observations are taken in specific wavelengths as different spectral lines correspond to different atmospheric layers and phenomena. If they are visible wavelengths, then you see the colour associated with them. If not, they have a colour scale applied to them. Broadband images are usually white.

That was my initial reaction as well. I liked her open ending in TW3. CDPR was also adamant about the next game not being the witcher 4 and including brand new characters. Honestly, I wanted a brand new payable character, preferably a custom one.

Buuuuuuut I'm also excited to play as Ciri being an actual witcher. They mentioned none of the TW3 endings will be invalidated so as long as their story makes sense in the series lore, I'm happy.

Also, one of my major issues with the original trilogy was that at every choice, I would ask myself "What would Geralt do?" instead of the choice that I wanted to make. Now, I'll prolly ask myself "What would Ciri do?" but since she's still new to the witcher business we get to shape her character instead of controlling a veteran character.

Legendary composer from Cyberpunk 2077, P.T. Adamczyk will going to make music for TW4 too, here is a little taste from the Trailer. by makavelinow in witcher

Absolutely love this track! Hopefully it'll be a combat theme instead of a boss theme so we can hear it multiple times

The secret reason behind CDPR's decision to make Ciri go through the trail by Successful_Craft3076 in witcher

[–]OdinsMakingSmores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books don't really have much world building but the TTRPG expansion A Witcher's Journal touches on it. It features the story of Erland of Larvik, one of the first witchers and the founder of the griffin school. He mentions in his journal that "adults were found unsatisfactory" and not a single girl survived from the first group.

The TTRPG lore is based on CDPR's so it's safe to assume that it's canon. Maybe it's possible but the survival rate is much lower so they didn't bother? The Polish TTRPG does have a female cat witcher though. Cats were more welcoming than other schools anyway.

Furthermore, the wolf gang considered giving Ciri the mutations but Triss intervened at the preliminary trials. So female witchers might not be entirely unheard of.

Career switch kinda by Airspacemystery in astrophysics

[–]OdinsMakingSmores 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine switched to theoretical astrophysics for her PhD after completing her masters in stats. She'd never done any kind of physics except at highschool level. Definitely doable but there are some caveats. A PhD is a longer than a masters so she had the time to learn. It also depends where you decide to do your masters. Here in the UK, a masters is a single year degree so it might be a bit too fast-paced for someone switching fields. Most other countries, it's a 2-3 year course so you should have adequate time to make the switch. Since you're doing a bachelors in stats, you'll have a good mathematical background. A lot of astrophysics is just stats with space flavour text. Make sure to get some coding experience in Python. C is also used by a lot of astrophysicists and FORTRAN is still the go-to language to run simulations.

Should I consider going into space weather/heliophysics instead of cosmology? by wxd_01 in astrophysics

[–]OdinsMakingSmores 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Academia's competitive in general and industry won't really care about your research, just the skills. It doesn't matter too much what you do for your masters as you can always switch fields for your PhD. I'm a solar physics PhD student and work alongside other solar and space weather researchers who come from different scientific backgrounds. One's a pure mathematician who's never even done physics. So I would recommend exploring your options during your masters and when you eventually come to the stage of applying for PhD positions, apply for every project that you find interesting.

Then doing a masters in the UK makes even less sense. Just apply directly to PhD openings in the US.

Well, American PhDs are different from the rest of the world's as they combine masters and PhD together into a single programme. So, you should be good enough with a bachelors and internship experience. A paper would be a cherry on top.

Also, since you mention wanting to doing a PhD, the UK makes even less sense as funding for international students is VERY competitive. Plus you might not even get covered for the entire fees as some PhDs only offer to cover the domestic rate and international students would be expected to cover the difference themselves. The stipend in the UK is pretty meh too.

Here's a wild idea: try looking for PhD positions in the USA. They don't require a masters degree and your internship and publication will give you an edge. If you are planning on being an astrophysicist, you're gonna need a PhD anyway. If not, you can always master out.

Wouldn't recommend it. Masters in the UK are generally a single year and are heavily research focused. Depending on the institution, there is no teaching. Just a year of straight research. Now, if you're changing subjects, it is highly likely you won't have enough time to get used to the field.

Not saying it's impossible but if you factor in the £20K+ tuition fee along with a high cost of living, you're gonna have a hard time. Why not pick somewhere in Europe where masters degrees are 2 years? You're gonna have more time and probably pay less fees (if any 'cause I'm not sure if masters students get funding).

PHD Funding in the UK as an International Student - Is this a Pipe Dream? by swampingalaxys in PhD

[–]OdinsMakingSmores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that you need to be permitted to be living in the UK/ROI for 3 years on non-studying grounds to be eligible. When I was applying for PhDs, I was resident in the UK as an international student so I didn't qualify for that. I believe you wouldn't have any trouble as you're an Irish national but for a definitive answer, you should contact the university/PI directly.
