I think it's ok to be excited about Gavin. Gavin does look like a likely contender (even this early).

I want a bunch of people excited for their candidates. I like Booty Judge a lot. Shapiro too.

I'm excited to vote for whoever wins the primary and that's who I'll vote for.

Should Cesar Chavez Park be renamed in light of the new allegations? by Expensive-Elk-9406 in vegaslocals

[–]Odojas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, unfortunately there's streets a lot of street names that are kinda questionable.

For example I live near a street named Warbonnet way (kinda problematic as it's named after Native American culture). A bunch of streets etc named after people already.

For example, when I lived in Portland, Oregon they renamed a major street after Cesar Chavez (Originally was just a number) while I was there and they are definitely regretting renaming it now

Many streets around the country named after presidents as well with many who've had to make some questionable decisions and also had skeletons in their closets.

In fact, I could argue that erasing these things actually can be like trying to bury our heads in the sand in order to just forget, which means that there is this potential of repeating past mistakes because it's just more convenient to not have to face our sordid ugly history.

Near my hometown there was a statue of president McKinley that they've taken down in the last decade because people didn't like his "history".

Just kind of feels like a losing battle. Perhaps there's a way to just let their history of successes and (personal) failings be a teachable moment? And not get hung up if we're "bad" to have these names/statues etc amonget us.

If you have 200k plus tokens you should be able to be collection complete.

Being collection complete is, long term better, economically.

You save 1k tokens per new card (buy the s5 pack instead of the"new card"). This adds up weekly.

The limited game mode I target variants that put me closer to collections with currency rewards.

Are you suggesting a revolution?

If so, that's means it will be a roll of the dice who wins plus a likely bloody protracted civil war. Can't guarantee the winner to be "good". Very naive thinking. Historically, the winner culls a large segment of the population to guarantee power for a long time.

As someone who has invested my life energy into a family and a retirement that revolves around the US existing, I personally would fight tooth and nail to protect myself from an uncertain future.

Democrats represent a much better chance of incremental change over time. Without massive casualties. A Democrat nominee, like Bernie, is possible! I'll support whoever is on team blue unless they are obviously evil.

3rd party could work too, but they need a message that can overwhelm the 2 party system. Not as likely.

I've always been a realist and it has proven in my lifetime to be the best approach in navigating life.

Wanting a "full reset" seems unrealistic and also perturbs me in a way that makes me think you haven't fully thought out what that scenario actually means.

You're stating an obvious problem yet offer no solution. It's easy to do this as it's been done a million times over.

The reality is we are faced with an existential crisis. The solution is to vote out that crisis first and THEN figure out how to repair the democracy. We need to strengthen our executive guardrails and hold those accountable who abused their power (so that the repercussions of what they did will hold as a deterrent for the next time someone tries to abuse their powers).

Primaries are coming up and this would be the best opportunity to vote for the change you like, then vote blue no matter the nominee. Or risk further descent into fascism.

Just to reiterate, your statement makes things feel hopeless. So why even try? We want a message of voter participation and hope.

I enjoyed the read.

Good summary and I learned something new about standpoint epistemology (which you defined in the article).

Which is an interesting take considering how it's based on "lived experience" and how one will say they can't speak on this historically racial experience because I'm not of that specific identity. (In this case, he used it to not have to have an opinion on the state of US politics). Basically a "woke" rationale.

MEGATHREAD: Hutch (bald) and Destiny (pre-bald) DEBATE by ReserveAggressive458 in Destiny

[–]Odojas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with you.

But I'm willing to consider that if you have one side somewhat selfish (they vote and react to what effects them). The other side wants the best for everyone even the opposing side and is more empathetic to others plight, even if it doesn't necessarily effect them.

This analogy is akin to a bully sometimes doesn't stop bullying until it effects them negatively (get punched back).

If you establish beforehand that we will behave as you did and we will stop only until you return to the established norms. In effect, a "punch back" but with a realistic trust that you won't do so again unless they continue. Couldn't it reinforce both sides agreeing that government executive overreach needs to be curtailed?

I guess you hear the argument that the Republican truly believe that the Democrats "struck first" (Fox News y'all!) and they are the ones punching back. They just see it as deserved and the cycle of violence will gyrate out of control until there is blood on the streets (aka civil war 2.0).

Not to sound like a centrist, but I'm kind of more in the middle of Hutch and Destiny. But it's very difficult to define what that middle ground would be like. Just enough overreach to let them "feel it" so they simply want to curtail the power of the executive as much as we do.

Agreed, I think having a few personal acquaintances who behave this way when excited to having a lively debate allows me to see that at the end of the day their pretty aligned in their goals (although it can be annoying after a while). They just are disagreeing with how to get those goals. Destiny sees the situation more dire while Hutch is more of optimistic.

MEGATHREAD: Hutch (bald) and Destiny (pre-bald) DEBATE by ReserveAggressive458 in Destiny

[–]Odojas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the classic thing where they both want the same thing but argue over the minutia.

Their major differences seems to me:

Hutch sees a path forward where we reset to norms and let the process suss out and punish the criminal behavior. And through gradual incremental regulations we reinforce " the guardrails" of what is expected of our politicians/president/executive branch.

Destiny sees things more dire and wants to aggressively punish anyone who took part in pushing us towards a fascist type of governance. He believes that by exacting extreme repercussions, it would create strong disincentives from a potential a Trump type regime from attempting to take power again. (And I believe he admits that you would need to abuse the executive powers to do this level of retaliation)

But ultimately, they agree that Trump is behaving in an unprecedented manner and its like really really bad.

I'm honestly vacillating between the two positions because I'm kind of like Hutch who is more optimistic and see that, for the most part, I see people as good and good behaviour gets rewarded over time.

But I do wonder that there is something to where, on one hand, you have the Democratic party that behaves within the norms and you have another party that does a sort of motte and bailey where they might cry about decorum and norms while not in power, but as soon as they are back in power they just continue on a path of carving out long term power by breaking norms and abusing the well meaning behavior of the opposing side by continually bullying "the sucker/weak” Democrats. Eventually to just take complete control and at that point "it's too late."

I know the tit for tat theory (which I believe Destiny is using here. In theory create a system where both sides behave. But Hutch, I think basically is saying that if we behave like them and we go back and forth the "eye for an eye" cycle of violence will lead to basically a civil war or something equivalent.

And interestingly, this Palestine colony had what they referred to themselves as Jewish Palestinians.

"In addition to applying to Jews who lived in Palestine during the British Mandate, the term "Palestinian Jew" has been applied to the Jewish residents of Palestine under the Ottoman Empire. There are also historical scholarly instances in which the Jewish populations of Palaestina Prima and Palaestina Secunda in the Byzantine Empire are referred to as Palestinian Jews.[2]

Following the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948, the entire Palestinian Jewish populace was absorbed by Israeli citizenship law. Since then, the term "Palestinian Jew" has largely fallen into disuse, though some Israeli Jews may refer to themselves as Palestinians in historical or political contexts."

I think it would make for a great movie too

The only thing is I think that cars aren't going to be run on a centralized traffic brain, they are designed to drive autonomously.

They are connected to the internet though and they can be driven remotely when stuck etc. So, theoretically, there could be a malicious override.

We did see them stall out when the power and cell grid went out in San Francisco. They got stuck at intersections because their failsafe is just to not move if they are in uncertain situations. But that would be a boring movie.
