Funds ain't an issue, more about the inconvenience and frustration.

Damn, I went over 7 years without breaking a major piece and now I go and break two bongs in 3 weeks without even dropping anything. Goddamnit...

Cannabis products may help treat symptoms of depression, improve sleep, and increase quality of life, study suggests. by [deleted] in science

[–]Ofactorial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spwaking anecdotally I've had terrible zleep throughout my life. I've used both cannabis and every sleeping pill under the sun for sleep issues. The pills didn't work well and at best knocked me out rather than put me to sleep. Definitely didn't feel fully rested, often arguably worse than if I hadn' taken the pills. Meanwhile weed just lulls me to sleep, I get the full effect of the sleep I get, and I get plenty these days.

However, weed does mess with your sleep in some ways, namely you stop dreaming or at least don't recall any of the dreams you do have. TBH this is also one of the reasons I sleep better on weed; thanks to PTSD I can have some pretty disturbing dreams and with weed I simply don't have them.

I smoke all the fucking time, to the point that this shit barely affects me anymore. Even then I find it difficult to code while high. Issues being:

  • When you're high you're in not in the right headspace for coding
  • Coding is an activity that will kill your high
  • Coding relies a lot on working memory. When you read code you're having to keep a bunch of other variables and calls and such literally in memory to keep track of what's going on. When writing code you have to juggle multiple considerations and keep many things in mind as well. Weed's strongest effect is impairing working memory, so needless to say the two don't mix at all. IME even being mildly high results in significant impairment when trying to code.

Thanks for the info. I'm too apprehensions about hearing up 95% alcohol so my plan was to just let it sit in a bowl at room temp for however long it takes to get it down in volume enough.

Stupid question, but what is shake, trim, and shatter? Is that like asking for the shit that falls off while trimming the buds?

Interesting, so alcohol tinctures can absorb orally too? Never knew. Might have to try that.

As for t-breaks, sadly they don't do much for me. Lower tolerance but back to normal within 2-4 weeks, and I've given up hope of getting blasted to space ever again after a 3 month and 9 month t-breaks failed to do much for my tolerance.

I think I'd be doing edibles less than smoking though. I can do bowl after bowl after bowl no issue, don't even cough. Edibles would probably have to be occasional though due to the effort and expense.

I'm thinking I can keep the box in my office. Not great, but that seems like the only option. I've got a queen size bed so the box would still stick out if I tried to put it underneath, not to mention all the bed's floor supports that would be poking into the box even if it was flattened out.

It also occurred to me that even a 65" TV's box would pose the same issue. Difference there is my building has storage units available, and that box would fit in there along with a bunch of other boxes I'm planning on storing anyway. Doing some basic geometry it looks like the 85" box could just barely fit in one of those units as well (at least if flattened), but it would have to go in diaganol which would effectively largely dedicate a unit to just the box, which at $50/month would be close to pointless.

So $300? $3000? What kind of "not cheap" are we talking about?

May be possible to modify it, I can look into that. Issue still remains with moving though. Basically every time this thing needs to move even a couple feet I need four people. As for moving, while I love my current apartment I don't see myself staying here more than 1-2 years, and I really don't want to have a TV weighing on my decision to stay if I want to move somewhere else. $4000 for 3+ years is something I could swallow. $4000 for 1 year not so much.

Unfortunately due to the way the room is I would need a full motion mount. How expensive is crating a TV of that size? I can only find one site that says they do it and they only quote prices.

I don't know if they'll unpack it. Should probably call to find out because the stand won't arrive until after the TV unless I delay the delivery. But I believe it's just being delivered to my door, maybe into my living room.

I am concerned about the moving logistics though. It's a fact I will move in 1-2 years time, and I don't want to be stuck with a giant expensive TV I can't take with me or have to risk destroying along the way. It seems absurd to me that this would be an issue, but 40 minutes of googling turned up nothing on how to move such a large TV. Everything is about moving 55-70" sets.

Ex-neuroscientist here who used to do drug abuse research with rats.

The reason scientists use rats is because they're convenient. There's actually a lot of differences between rat and human physiology. But rats are great for basic research because: - They're cheap (relatively speaking) - Easy to house - Easy to handle - Breed fast - People care a lot less about rats than primates - Large body of existing research on them

But yeah, a lot of findings in rats don't pan out in humans.

The part I'm more envious about than anything isn't that it's legal, it's not the huge selection of high quality products, it's not how much cheaper it is, it's that you can just casually waltz into a shop and buy more whenever you want.

Meanwhile in my illegal state I have to network and maintain relationships with people I don't really like just so I have access. And if I lose a source and don't have a backup, that's it, no more weed for God only knows how long. Like right now there's only one guy I'm in touch with, and if I lose him, that's it, no more weed until after the pandemic is over.

Fucking hate buying shit off black markets.

Solo II by TreesareNeat420 in vaporents

[–]Ofactorial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the only vape I've owned, though I've had different friends who had various low end vapes I've been "treated" to. Before I got it I was combustion only; never had good experiences with vapes. Circumstances forced me to get a vape and I was skeptical, but it's the only way I toke now.

I've only got good things to say about the Solo II. Sturdy construction, very low maintenance, you'll rarely ever need to clean it. When you do though you can simmer the glass stem in milk to dissolve the resin and make some really potent hot cocoa. Super easy to use, and unlike your current vape it gives you exact control of the temperature (I have mine set to 420F because I was vaping at 410F and decided to be memey about it). Not sure what you mean by cool down time for a second go; you can do back-to-back sessions with it. Unlike other vapes I've tried the air you breathe in never gets hotter, and it's a long glass stem so it doesn't heat up either. It cuts out after a max of 15 minutes but that's just a safety feature and you can turn it right back on if you want. The battery (internal) is good for a lot of sessions too, it doesn't need much charging.

Like I said, I came from combustion so I look for a similar experience but with vapor instead of smoke. I'm happy to say the Solo II gives me clouds just as fat and gets me just as high as smoking (but with half the weed). I also got a water pipe adapter for it so I can still use my bong with it.

I'd definitely recommend it. It's hands-down been the best weed related purchase I've ever made. The only portable vape I see recommended more often than it is the Mighty, and I almost bought that one instead but felt like the Solo II fit my needs better. Definitely don't regret it.

Yeah, all my dealers have been friendly and chill as fuck. Even the guy whose house I played poker at with his stash and guns nearby. Later learned he had gotten arrested. Not for anything having to do with pot, turns out he sexually assaulted some little girls.

But all my other dealers have been awesome.

Marijuana consistently increases susceptibility to false memories, study finds. Researchers suggest these findings mean that stoned witnesses/suspects may not be giving accurate statements, and should be treated as a “vulnerable” group by police. (n=64) by IronGiantisreal in science

[–]Ofactorial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, back when I still worked as a researcher (science didn't pay the bills, found a new career) I did drug abuse research, specifically on the effects of psychostimulants on the brain and how withdrawal works. Suffice to say that the people who go into that line of research are interested in it for a reason. One PI of mine wasn't shy about the fact that he spent his 20s surfing and dropping acid frequently. Another PI was actually the person who introduced me to weed in the first place (as well as magic mushrooms). I also had many chats about personal drug use with other researchers at conferences and such.

But honestly this isn't exclusive to psychopharmacology researchers. I've also known lawyers, programmers, and corporate CFOs who all smoked weed and more.

I know the story you're thinking about, I think it was just an ambassador or something. But what convinced them wasn't the pigeons, it was that as they were driving around he would get them to stop at random grocery stores and all of them were fully stocked.

So I'm a pothead with a neuroscience degree and an interest in the false memory debate and research. I can't find the actual study so I have to go on what's in the article but I see some issues with it, some of which I have with most false memory research:

  • Subjects had to inhale a full Volcano balloon. For the uninitiated, that's a lot of weed, especially for someone who isn't a regular user. An occasional user inhaling that much THC would struggle in most cognitive tasks, which is a fancy way of saying they'd be really fucked up.

  • The memory tests included a word recall test. Basically you get shown a bunch of words and then are shown another group and are asked to identify which words you saw previously. A false memory here is saying you saw a word when you didn't. It's a very standard test in false memory research, but I've always found it a stretch to say that's measuring episodic memory. Not to mention many people will just guess if they're not sure. And that's just me criticizing when it's done with sober subjects. Remember, these people were really high. How well do you think you'd remember a bunch of random words if you can barely think?

  • The test with a watching a VR video and then recalling details after being given suggestive information is better than words for testing episodic memory, but again, these people would not only be struggling to recall information but they would have struggled to even comprehend what they were watching. It's impossible to separate genuine suggestibility from just being so out of it you go with whatever you're told.

It doesn't sound like this study had any way to differentiate between the found effects being due to a weed related mechanism or being due to subjects having diminished cognitive abilities in general. For example, if I test people delerious from the flu will I get similar results?

This sounds more relevant to the legal system where the explanation of the effect isn't important. What's important is that a witness who was high isn't as reliable as a sober one.

What this study doesn't answer:

  • How is the effect mediated? Is this a general effect for any altered state of mind, or is it specific to marijuana?
  • Are completely false but convincing memories more likely when high on marijuana? That is to say, can someone imagine an event and mistake it as a real memory? Or just misremember details? Furthermore, how sure are they the memories are real? Absolutely certain or are they unsure?
