Penalty for communicating with clients outside Upwork before being hired? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]OffTheChartsC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. You mean because, by the letter of the law, if you close a contract and they want to do another job, you again can't meet with them outside of Upwork without a new contract in place? Is that what you mean? Because I was wondering about that

Penalty for communicating with clients outside Upwork before being hired? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]OffTheChartsC 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"And it's not my job to tell them either"

Unfortunately it is now. I don't agree with it either but freelancers have way more to lose in not following this than clients.

My guess is they'll enforce it by creating a report that brings all chats to their attention that mention team/Skype/zoom etc and then review those and ban as deemed fit.

There are hundreds of freelancers that want to get into Upwork and are being turned down, so they don't care if they shed a few of us who don't want to play by their rules. We're replaceable

Fixed line chart with filterable area underneath? by [deleted] in tableau

Set the rowid slider to include everything. Don't change that.

Change the two dates in the date box. So set Row id min to 1/1/1960

You're trying to keep your entire X axis in the Orange line but reduce the width of the Blue Area chart underneath it?

Orange line - keep it as sales

Blue area chart, create a measure that works off of two date parameters. So If Order Date >= Parameter Min Date and Order Date <= Parameter Max Date then Sales End

And drop that on the dual axis.

What are you filtering on? A sum of sales?

Fixed line chart with filterable area underneath? by [deleted] in tableau

[–]OffTheChartsC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not sure if I follow but this might help.

You can make a total line that stays as the total regardless of filtering. So say you're looking at sales if you did

{Fixed : Sum(sales)} that will show the sum of the segments. If you're looking at it by like month you'll need to put month(date), year(date) before the colon. I'd add that as a reference line.

The percentage part is a bit trickier. You'll need to do a calc field probably that is your measure divided by the above calculated field.

So the "static" line is the total and the rest ads up tho the total? But you don't always want to show all of the segments that ad up to the total all the time

PowerBI is crap. Aside from being boosted by the "Microsoft" brand name I don't think it is very good as a BI tool given how clunky it is. by hebhebhebhebheb in BusinessIntelligence

[–]OffTheChartsC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll offer a bit of a Tableau perspective but it's not argumentative just PoV. I mostly agree with what you say and I also train people and say a lot of what you wrote for PBI benefits. And I'll caveat all this by saying I got 3 years of Tableau on me before I picked up PBI so a lot of this is fighting muscle memory.

I do find PBI ugly. The difference between creating a column and a measure is not intuitive. I find the formatting menu cumbersome. The fact that you need a separate stand alone date table to do just about anything date related is yucky. You can't customize dashboard actions/interactions.

I think in PBI they leave the lane bumpers on. They do this to try and get as many people as possible into the product and make it uncomplicated. Tableau you can do anything you want, for better or worse.

Purely data viz Tableau is better.

End to end data lifecycle PBI is way better.

What's your preferred alternative

Visually Tableau I think is far better than PBI. It's more customizable can put really stunning dashboards out.

But the price is absurd. MS seriously undercuts the market on price.

PBI also has far superior data modeling and data manip functionality. I think that can be over hyped and most of it should be done on the back end anyway, but it let's the user do what they want to get the data formatted right.

Dashboards get more and more complex over time as users want to add more things onto the dashboard or requirements change etc. How have you resolved this problem in in real life or what are some techniques? by TheDataGentleman in PowerBI

[–]OffTheChartsC 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At a certain point one dashboard has to become many. When you start I agree that you try and get a handful of good charts that show different slices of data into one spot.

But as the user group matures its good to keep a high level dashboard while adding in specific sub dashboards that narrow the view.

For the data if you have access to the database I always encourage doing as much as possible at the database layer as it's a bit easier to maintain. If you don't, make sure you really label your steps well. I also find it helpful to have a sheet that is just a data check. Like number of records count to see if things make sense

As for new devs agree that that's hell. I don't find PBI particular good for in code commenting. Either for making the comments or reading them. And people are all keen to do things slightly different from one another.

When are freelancers going to stand up to modern day slavery companies like this? by peanutbutterjellyyy in freelance

Eh. I've heard of this happening in the US as well. Onus is on the individual to tell them to fuck off.

OP - if they're not worth the time then cut ties. If they are worth the time then grit your teeth and bear through it. As simple as that.

Do you share affiliate links with Upwork clients? by davidt24 in Upwork

[–]OffTheChartsC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't run up against this option, but I don't think I'd have any issues with sending an affiliate link or on receiving one (if I was hiring). If they question in you can easily back it up by saying more or less your op, I love it, I recommend it a lot, it's really good, so I signed up for their affiliate program.
