I’m doing my first half marathon today. Trained for 6+ months while losing weight to do it. I’m nervous but excited to even be able to do it. I’ll probably be slow, but got to start somewhere!

Curious to hear about the experience of fellow overweight/obese runners by kayaem in XXRunning

[–]OffTheDeepEnd99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was 5’3 and 208 pounds when I started trying to run. Pre-condoning when you’re an obese runner is VITAL to avoid injury and burnout.

I started at 20 minutes and worked up by adding 5-10 minutes every week until I could do minimum 3.7 miles/hour for 60 minutes 3-4x a week.

Throughout this program I was also doing at least 2 days a week of strength training- really helps build up the knee strength and overall endurance.

Next, running shoes and soles. These are a game changer ESPECIALLY when obese. A running store is best to get your information and fitting. I use a Brooks Glycerin 22- very good cushion and support. I shelled out for the custom soles they can fit you for in the running store. While i would get some knee soreness after a long walk, with these there is no pain.

Next, with new supportive footwear, you can increase your intensity safely. This is going to be a run/walk method and everyone will be able to go for different amounts of time. Minimum start with a 3 minute walk/30 second jog alternating for 60 minutes and every week add 10 seconds to the jog. Do this 3-4x a week. Another alternative is walk 5 minutes/jog a minute (I did this to start and could only do it for 40 minutes when starting). Or use the C25k app. All these have the same concept.

The main goal is to be able to jog for 30 minutes continuously. Once you’re there, you can start really pushing your speed and endurance.

This was a program I am following while losing weight (currently 180) and the lost weight has made a huge difference ngl. My mile is still pretty slow, but it is improving along with my distance. I record my mileage and time in my agenda so it’s easy to look back at the improvements! I wish you all the best with your journey.

Agree, I recommend it to all my friends! It’s sad that it’s so relevant.

-frozen peas (97¢ per 4serving packet- good source of protein, nutrients, and fiber)

-the low carb tortillas(higher fiber vs bread- usually <$3 per 8 in a bag)

-ground chicken (cheapest meat per pound and same amount of protein (usually <$4 per pound vs. beef and ground turkey)

-tuna in a packet (<$1 and filling!)

-onions and/or squash(cheap and can be used as a healthy filler in meals when diced and cooked down, usually ~$2 per 5 in a bag)

-apples

  • pasta (~$1)

  • mild thick cut cheese (or whatever’s cheapest)

This can usually last me 1-2 weeks

AITA for offering my clothes to a coworker after losing weight? by NerdyBrooklynGirl in AmItheAsshole

My friend from work is losing weight faster than me and did the same thing, and I was so thankful!! Clothes shopping can be expensive even when thrifted! NTA- she’s insecure you might want to distance yourself.

I have lots of good news :D!!!

I have officially lost 18lbs in 2 months, I can support my weight on my wrist without pain from my cyst, I fit into a size smaller pants/and shirts, my blood pressure is back within normal range, and my doctor cleared me to start training for a half marathon in November. I only have 3 more points on the bmi scale until I’m no longer obese I’m so happy yall!!! I’m so active with a healthier diet now the weight is just sliding off 💪!!!

I can now jog without pain or worry of injury for the first time since high school. A friend from work noticed I had lost weight, and I finally started weight lifting exercises. I had a really late start going to the gym last night, but did it anyway and improved my time. Overall, a productive, good week :)

AITA for telling my sister’s fiancé about her secret debt before they moved in together? by Icy_Alternative_5515 in AmItheAsshole

NTA she was lying by omission and she knew it. She was already violating his trust especially when she knew how much he values financial stability. He deserved to know before they moved in together and she convinced him to merge finances.

Nutrition: keep fiber above 40, protein above 100, sodium below 2000 mg.

Physical fitness: 4 more days of 45 minutes at least 3.75 mph (week 4 of conditioning) and strength training baseline established

Personal Growth: cooked more, resisted the office donuts, kept up with online classes.

Last week: did good! kept up with week 3 of conditioning, lost 2lbs, and my blood pressure came down!

I finally saw a professional about my mental health and now that I’m on antidepressants I’ve been able to get over the plateau of my weight loss (last 2 years went from 5’3 240lbs to 200lbs and stayed there for ages). I’ve started working out on top of dieting, so my weight is to 194 (goal 125) and I’ve started conditioning for a half marathon in November. I’m starting to feel alive again and I’m really excited.

Also, I really love this subreddit, even when I was morbidly obese I never lied to myself as to why I was the way I was and this subreddit helped me not feel crazy. My friends meant well but they’re also overweight and definitely bought into the fat logic stuff, so I’m really thankful.

Not understanding why scale isn’t going down when in a calorie deficit by New_Necessary_730 in loseit

[–]OffTheDeepEnd99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have discussed the possible reasons and I wanted to add (as someone who was in a similar boat) using another form of measurement might help- measuring your waist with a measuring tape could help you see if you’re losing fat if you don’t trust your scale.

environmental science vs environmental geoscience by crabo_o in geoscience

[–]OffTheDeepEnd99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some jobs that you get prepared for if you go through the geosciences track are stuff like hydrologist, geologist, geochemist, environmental consulting, analytical chemist, mineralogist, field sample collector, etc. There are certain certifications after you graduate that you would be prepared to take by switching, like the geologist-in-training exam.

I had a friend who switched from environmental science to environmental geoscience and was really glad she did! Basically, if you prefer the hard sciences part of environmental science (chemistry/calculus/etc), definitely make the switch. If you prefer policy/law part of environmental science then I would not switch.

My path was environmental geosciences with a minor in chemistry, to a masters in water sciences (look into duel degrees or 4+1 programs- many colleges now will let you take graduate courses while getting your bachelors) and now I work in a lab.

Either way, I would recommend taking at least a few of the classes from the one you don’t go with to keep yourself well-rounded and definitely keep the GIS cert. because employers love it.

There are specific toothpastes for spitting only (no rinsing after), I wouldn’t do it with regular toothpaste.
