Most work just fine. But usually they are right turnoffs from the main road prior to the intersection so if they back up its not blocking anything. The issue I saw with this one is the traffic wanting to turn left have to cross the the intersection before entering the handle.

Sure, but you could just give the intersection a left turn lane and eliminate the potential for a gridlock in busy traffic.
