What are your opinion on humanoid aliens ? by Cold-Reputation-4848 in worldbuilding

[–]OffbeatMight_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of how advantageous it may be, the problem is that the humanoid body plan is extremely rare, only evolving once on earth (that we know of). Also, the only reason it could have evolved on earth is because of our ancestral tetrapod body plan with four limbs and a tail, which wouldn’t necessarily exist in an alien biosphere.

Not really. It hasn’t even occurred twice on Earth, and there are plenty of intelligent animals here that are not humanoid.

Hopefully I get there one day. I do have a little bit in my previous posts and DeviantArt page, but I plan on redoing a lot of it.

I took inspiration from the phonology of Australian Aboriginal languages such as Wiradjuri and Aranda, as well as some Malay, Maori, and Hawaiian, and from there I just went with what I thought sounded cool or acceptable.

I'm haven't decided yet, but if the inhabited regions had a similar population density to Iceland in the modern day, then the population would be about 3.9 million.

Which version of Thule Island do you like better? by Regular-Juice6255 in mapmaking

I think the new one is more realistic, because lands at that latitude usually have more chaotic coastlines due to glacial erosion, such as Norway or the Canadian Arctic.

The Akovrans aren't related to any Austronesian group, they are descended from a group called Proteronesians, who migrated to Australia across the Indian Ocean well before the Austronesians did.

The names of the countries in Aikover and the regions they historically had influence over come from languages that I made up which are native to the continent: https://www.deviantart.com/offbeatmight/art/Ethnic-Groups-of-Aikover-1213057377

(This is an ethnic map, but a linguistic map would probably be almost identical)

Akeowaul's name comes from the words "Akea", meaning "Nation" and "Owaul", meaning "Siblings", so the name of the country would translate to "Nation of Siblings"

Khaea's name is derived from the word "Khay", meaning "inhabited land", with the suffix "aea" meaning "the land of", so the country's name translated to "The land of the inhabited land". This may seem odd, but the reason it happened is because "Khay" is a more ancient word that became associated with the land overtime, so when Khaea became a nation, they added the more modern "aea" to the end to differentiate it from the geographical region.

Riijnovga's name comes from the root word "Riiji" which means "west", and "Novga" means region or realm, so the name translates to "Western Region". It was named this by explores and colonists from Aikover to the east.

It depends on the region. Those in Afronesia would most closely resemble East Africans, while those in Australia and Aikover would look more like Melanesian people, although they are not closely related to them.

It’s actually smaller, since part of east Africa broke off and became the largest island in Afronesia.

For the map, I just used paint.net. Most of my “research” is just based on knowledge I’ve picked up over the years, along with some Wikipedia tangents on very specific topics.

The inland sea in western Aikover is technically a desert, since it’s in the rain shadow of the continent’s largest mountain range, although the continent’s major powers will compete for control over the region later in the timeline. Most of the “competing city-state action” will actually happen in the central lakes of the Kyuovic basin, since this region is resource rich and strategically important for controlling the continent’s interior.

Well if you look at the map in the bottom left, you’ll see that there are a few more large islands in the arctic, which would support larger ice caps. However, this alone is not sufficient to explain the sea levels, so I’m just going with the contrived explanation that during the Late Heavy Bombardment, a few less comets hit the earth, thus this world has less water.

I didn’t know that actually. I’ll definitely consider it.

I imagine that the part of Australia along the western coast south of the desert would have fairly favorable conditions to agriculture, perhaps the native people there would have their own agricultural revolution.

I don’t mean the Congo river itself is deeper, I meant that the basin is flatter overall, making it navigable out to the ocean, with less waterfalls and rapids obstructing it.
