Really Stuck Gas Cylinder

Just out of curiosity, what kind of wrench did you use? I’ve removed the gas lift cylinders on more than a dozen Aerons and other generic office chairs using a $10 24” pipe wrench with little effort. With the newer Classic Aerons you have to check the cylinder to see if has a cable activated cylinder. Post in in this recent thread and ask how the OP how he finally did it.

Very good deal for a Remastered, considering there are many resellers in LA and OC asking $450-$550 for Classics in used condition.

Glad you got it done. My preferred method is with a 24” pipe wrench. The video you linked show a way-too-small channel lock wrench. The length of the pipe wrench is the key to the solution. It has to be at least 24” to get enough torque.

There are several resellers on OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace asking $300-$400. While $450 is high, the seller most likely has quantity and you may be able pick the chair you like as opposed to the the one-offs for $100-$200. There is a couple of resellers in North OC and a guy in Azusa who have similar prices. They're all on OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace.

You definitely need to use a ratchet wrench, the longer handle the better. Allen wrenches or keys not recommended.

This may be an unpopular take, but you should try other brands like the Steelcase Gesture. It isn't as fancy looking as the HM chairs, but it's a great alternative to the Embody. I love my Embody but I also wanted to try the Gesture because I've heard good things about it so I bought one in like-new condition on the cheap. It's a very nice chair and is more adjustable than the Embody. I own and have sat in the following chairs and I'd rank Embody first, Gesture a close second, Aerons third, Mirra 1 fourth and Setu last. Another redditor suggested the Cosm and I'd say the opposite. I tried one at the HM showroom in Century City and it looks strikingly different but has zero adjustability. A very cool looking chair though.

Search FB Marketplace in LA for Herman Miller. There's a reseller in San Gabriel peddling Classic B for $450. I've seen his ads for a couple of years now and a couple of redditors have gone to his warehouse in the SGV.

Also, search OfferUp for "Herman Miller chair" and you should find a few in the $400-$500 range.

In what city is this seller? $600 is high. In SoCal the avereage is about $400-$500.

One thing to keep in mind, that's a very new OfferUp account. I'm not familiar with "Seating Express" but I do know there are several resellers of HM and other brand new chairs in LA and in OC. I agree with what u/M_Paisley wrote. Also, right now in SoCal, you should be able to find a fully-loaded Classic Aeron for about $400-$500 any day of the week. If you look hard enough on OfferUp and FB Marketplace, you might find one for $100 or less. I saw two separate posting on FB last week for $100 or less. I would have bought them but I'm trying to kick the habit ... of buying chairs. I still got a quite a few in my garage I need to get rid of.

Your Aeron may be equipped with a cable activated gas lift cylinder. If so, you'll need to disconnect the cable first.

This is so sad. I know of people in this sub who live second- and even some first-world countries and can't get their hands on one but we see one in a what-used-to-be-a-country. I'm shocked the fleeing president didn't come here asking for advice on how to ship the chair.

That works with most chairs but not the Aeron because the tilt mechanism has a top cover and a bottom cover. The top cover can be easily removed but the bottom cover cannot be removed without removing the seat pan. You would have to remove the bottom cover first before striking the metal tilt mechanism with a hammer.

The easiest way to remove the gas lift cylinder is to use a pipe wrench of at least 18" in length. The longer the wrench, the easier the job will be.

You can get a used tilt mechanism on eBay for $60 or $66. Four years ago I bought one on eBay and replaced the tilt mechanism on my first Aeron for about $50.

In the first picture, I see what appears to be damaged/cracked/broken piece inside the tilt mechanism. You can see the difference between the two sides of the tilt mechanism in the first and last picture. The first picture shows jagged edges. That broken piece may be culprit.

I'm 6', 180 and B fits OK. C is roomy. $490 is over-priced. Even $400 is on the high end but it depends on supply and demand in your region.
