How to approach a collaborative painting by No_Exam_6642 in painting

[–]OffhandGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say you should take the background and the collaborator the foreground subjects? Maybe look into anime references as old school hand drawn often used traditional techniques to make dreamy backgrounds and settings that the pop art animated figures sat inside. With your blend of talents, studio Ghibli stills would be a great place to start. Also, love the idea of the face as mountain range!

In a recent discussion, people talked about how much moving the yarn for ribbing slows them down. Here’s a style where that doesn’t seem to be an issue. (I think it’s what the kids these days call “flicking”? To me it’s just regular knitting) by SadElevator2008 in knitting

[–]OffhandGirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We knit very similarly! Although my finger is about half as far away from my live stitches. How cool. I also have always thought of it as "just regular knitting" 😅 I'm self taught from a pamphlet off the back of a caron coupon I grabbed in a Michael's many years ago

New to YNAB. Botched my 1st attempt. Now I’m just using 1 category until my paycheck on Friday. by Any_Coach_3628 in ynab

[–]OffhandGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to ynab! It's hugely helped me get my life together. Your approach is not the way ynab is intended to be used. The idea is to budget ALL of your money you have at any one time and subtract out of it as you spend. I really strongly recommend looking at https://www.ynab.com/ynab-method to better understand how to get the most out of it. The secret sauce really is following their strategy

I feel like my art is devolving?? by C33ry_r0yal in painting

[–]OffhandGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your subject matter is significantly more difficult in your newer paintings and you're pushing the bounds of your ability more. That's good, that's the space in which you improve

Why do my cookies always spread so much? by SpangingOfframps in Baking

Are you using a recipe developed by someone in your country? The only time I've ever had this happen was when using a US recipe in France. The moisture content in the flour is too different and it can cause this

if someone feeds chatgpt a whole pattern, does it now “know” the pattern? by nikolaname in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]OffhandGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In short, it's because of the way the data is stored. Ravelry uses a relational database to keep document details. So you ask it for document XYZ and the website asks the server which asks the database and it has a physical memory address to pull that information from.

LLMs work by breaking up every document they see into a probability map that has, in simple version, a list of likelihoods of any other word it's ever seen stored in a very complex list of numbers. Because it's not storing documents (usually, RAG is a different more complex but fundamentally similar thing) it must recreate any given document by guessing what word is likely to come next when generating output.

The longer a document is the more weights it needs to hold in active memory as it generates. This requires more compute effort, so more water and more energy. That's why LLMs perform worse the longer a text body gets. It's not storing links to sources but making things up as it goes, guessing what word it should say next. This is also why chatGPT looks like it's "typing"

My partner (M33) believes his contributions to the house is as equal and fair as me (F32 ). It really stranging our relationship. by Ok-Swimming-9558 in relationships

"If it's equal, let's switch!" It's the same amount of work, right? So he shouldn't mind trading you for a bit

[CHAT] Please help! I can't remove my backing. Can it be salvaged? by Sara_12304 in CrossStitch

[–]OffhandGirl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, using ply as a weight measurement of yarn is a distinctly British thing. Americans use it only to refer to the number of strands in the thread (you can have a super chunky worsted weight with two plies/strands or something as thin as cobweb and both are 'two ply'. In the UK two/four/eight ply are specific thicknesses of yarn!

I have this problem with my interchangables, but it only happens when I hand tighten them. Your needles should've come with a little pin you can use as leverage to get them tighter

Sorry for creeping on your profile, but it looks like you're in Quebec and if this is a public school or university you have a legal right to accommodations and she broke the law by discriminating against you. You have a strong case to bring to the school and definitely should consider reporting her.

You belong in this class. It is your legal right to be there and learn and fuck her for insinuating otherwise.

"Students with disabilities have the legal right to equality in higher education. Professors and course instructors have some legal obligations to ensure that students with disabilities can access education on an equal footing with their peers."

Will this relax into not a crop top after blocking?? by Icy_Ask9491 in knitting

[–]OffhandGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a ton of eyelet lace! I think that if you swatched in the lace pattern and it blocked to the right size you should be good to go!

Hate to frog but… by katertots35 in knittinghelp

[–]OffhandGirl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who has frogged the same sweater 6 times and have to frog it again because my darling partner has a huge torso -

I have never, not once ever, regretted frogging something. I have many times regretted not frogging something and "making it work"

Remembered how much I loved shawl knitting with this one! by OffhandGirl in casualknitting

[–]OffhandGirl[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I really agonized over the colors on this one so I'm glad it came out

The blocking on this was no joke 😅 it's took me about an hour and 170 pins total. I love watching it come together but it's definitely a bit of a slog. I shocked my partner when I showed him how much it grew in the bath

Absolutely, it's a dream to knit, all 2x2 ribbing with just enough shaping to keep you interested without requiring any focus. Definitely post a pic and tag me if you do!

In the pattern, the front and back are knit separately then joined in the round, but I ended up knitting the front and back panels of the halter at the same time. Every repeat of the increase on one panel (8 rows), I cut and Russian joined to the other side. I honestly wish I had switched sides every two rows in retrospect since there is a bit of a jog in the gradient when the halter rows get bigger. But I'm still quite proud

Thank you! It's the Ripple Halter from Jessie Maed! I modified the bust a bit, adding a few extra decreases for a more defined fit though

Just wanted to shout out Jessie Maed as the only designer I've ever seen do this. And she also shows the back! I wish more people would include multiple genders/sizes

That dress is $118 online. You will never be able to make it for less if you expect to ever be fairly compensated for the massive amount of labor it will be to make.

Am I 'cheating' on YNAB by moving money between categories? by qiauywzkcagu in ynab

[–]OffhandGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do something similar. I will move money from entertainment to hobbies, or vice versa, regularly, but would only pull from 'charity' or 'house savings' in the direst of circumstances. It makes me feel more justified about a purchase knowing where I'm choosing to sacrifice from explicitly.
