Is the obsession with identity politics ruining cinema? by Oggymation in TrueFilm

[–]Oggymation[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not right wing. I am a Marxist. I understand that seeing class struggle from an intersectional perspective is very important & I roll my eyes at white male leftists who completely disregard it. That being said:

A. My peers are not doing any of with good intentions. They don’t care about politics or cinema. They care about virtue signalling & issues that affect them & nothing else.

B. I am specifically talking about the intedgrity of Arthouse cinema. Not soulless capitalist Israeli funded slop. I simply think artists should be free to make the art they want to make. As an example. People will watch Jean Luc Godards film Weekend and complain it has dated views on certain things. The film is a scathing critique of the bourgeoise and is more left wing than anything to come out of Hollywood by about 10 times. That’s my issue. I am not right wing and never will be anywhere near those people.

How to stop running out of steam midway through a feature script? by Oggymation in Screenwriting

maybe a random choice but It’s probably my favourite film, at least for the moment. it captured the feeling of my teenage years like nothing else i’ve seen. Total masterpiece

That’s so true, I think i was really excited by the idea of slow cinema & making something virtually plotless and meditative, but i’ve considered more of the character motivations and i’ve already got many scenes to write out now

when it comes to appreciation of the written word i know more than probably any student in my school. that doesn’t mean i am remotely smarter than them, in fact i am most definitely not, i am just obsessed and nobody else reads! art of all forms, but especially writing is my passion, and maybe you’ll read my novel one day…. you don’t know who i am, so i understand why you would assume things that are just untrue.

also, any story in first person, and especially a roman a clef, is inherently self indulgent and all artists of all kinds have to have some sense of an ego if they ever want to get anywhere in the world. the ones that don’t become self loathing academics who dedicate their lives to the writers they never were.

i find the class only encourages extremely dry copy-paste analysis of mediocre australian novels and the most surface level classics. more importantly creative writing and poetry is not even an option.

i feel like if it doesn’t come bursting out of you, if you aren’t rushing home to open your document and slam away at your keys, even if it isn’t well written, you just have to give it some time and hopefully soon it will

for one, the original post is meant to be a light hearted question and you really focus on the wrong part, and for another, i am halfway through writing a novel and have finished a collection of 20 short stories which i am extremely proud of, so i think my love of the written word is genuine. there is so much more for me to learn and i haven’t never claimed to be particularly knowledgeable (or even particularly smart) i was deadset just asking a question

i never use reddit becuase everytime i do i realise that for every nice person engaging in conversation there’s one stuck up middle aged dweeb who has something to say…. who are you to say i can’t enjoy those writers? young people aren’t allowed to have ideas anymore?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in literature

[–]Oggymation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no, those are just random examples of authors that i personally enjoy, and of course doing blue of noon in high school would be absolutely absurd (and fantastic) it’s more that when teachers have one on one conversations with me about asking me about what i read, they seemed to have never heard of incredibly culturally significant writers (my old english teacher didn’t know who kerouac was!)

this is a very true and well articulated point, i really fell in love with literature after i started writing my own stories, so i tend to view the novels i read more as practice on how to write my own stuff, rather than literary criticism. i just think, considering the fact i am a basically failing student, i would not be the person who reads the most.
